For Master of Engineering Studies [MEngSt] with / without Transportation specialisation, also for
Post Graduate Certificate / Diploma [PGCert/DipEng], or for a one-off Certificate of Proficiency, COP.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Semester 1 (Mar-Jun, ‘19) Provisional - dates / timing changes may be made
CIVIL758 – Traffic Systems Traffic signal timing analysis, gap acceptance parameters, intersection
Design (Monday 4-6pm, analysis of performance (priority, roundabouts, signals), introduction to
Tuesday 5-6pm, 12 weeks) transportation planning and modelling techniques, the Resource
Management Act requirements, computer modelling and simulation.
CIVIL765 – Infrastructure Advanced theories and techniques fundamental to the management of
Asset Management (20-22 infrastructure assets, primary focus on Asset Management Plans (AMP).
March & 15-17 May) Entire spectrum of infrastructure, roads, water and buildings. Major project
incorporates a literature review / critical review of an AMP from industry.
CIVIL769 - Highway An advanced course in highway geometric design techniques. Through an
Geometric Design (27-29 independent project, advanced theory, methods, processes and design
March, 8-10 May) tools are applied to the safe design of highway geometric alignments that
includes an understanding of human / driver behaviour characteristics.
CIVIL770 - Transport Advanced specialist topics in transportation economics including, theory of
Systems Economics (13-14 demand and supply of transport, government intervention policies, and
March, 1-2 May & 29-30 May) externalities and agglomeration. Two transportation infrastructure projects
analysed to determine likely future social / real time benefits / dis-benefits.
Semester 2 (Jul-Oct, ’19) Provisional - dates / timing changes may be made
CIVIL759 – Highway & Economic and environmental assessments of transport projects. Road
Transportation Design safety engineering. Crash reduction and prevention methods. Pavement
(Thursday 5-6pm, asset management. Pavement rehabilitation techniques. Heavy-duty
Friday 1-3pm, 12 weeks) pavements, highway drainage and chip seal design.
CIVIL762 – Transportation Provides an in-depth exploration of various components of the urban
Planning (7-9 August, 23-25 transportation planning process, with emphasis on theories on modelling.
October) Conventional four-stage transport planning model principles, trip
generation, distribution, modal split and assignment, are covered.
CIVIL766 – Road Asset Road asset management advanced topics - critical awareness key issues
Management (12-14 August encountered, including evaluation of functional / structural performance;
& 23-25 September) risk management; deterioration modelling and calibration; prioritisation /
optimisation. Core skills extended by a complex RAM problem.
CIVIL 771 – Planning & An advanced course on integrating land use planning and transport
Managing Transport (29-30 provisions, including planning for different land use trip types and parking,
July, 26-27 August & 14-15 travel demand management techniques, and intelligent transport systems.
October) An independent project applies this specialised knowledge.
