a. The two shafts of a Hooke’s coupling have their axes inclined at 200. The shaft
A revolves at a uniform speed of 1000 rpm. The shaft B carries a flywheel of
mass 30 kg. If the radius of gyration of the flywheel is 100 mm, find the
maximum torque in shaft B.

I. Explain the working of Hart mechanism with suitable diagram and
prove that it will produce straight line motion.
II. The velocity of point B of the linkage shown in the figure is 40 m/s.

c. The following data relate to a symmetrical circular cam operating a flat-faced


follower:
Minimum radius of the cam 40 mm
Lift -24 mm
Angle of lift =750
Nose radius = 8 mm
Speed of the cam = 420 rpm
Determine the main dimensions of the cam and the acceleration of the
follower at:
(i) the beginning of the lift
(ii) the end of contact with the circular flank
(iii) the beginning of contact with the nose
(iv) the apex of nose.

d. Figure shows an epicyclic gear train in which gear A drives the internal gear D
through compound gears B and C. The number of teeth on gear A is 20 and
center distance between the center of gears A and B is 300 mm. If module of
all gears is 10 mm and gear C has 30 teeth, find the speed of gear D. The arm
rotates at 600 rpm in counter clockwise direction and gear A is fixed.

(a) Explain Kennedy’s theorem. Also prove that if three bodies are in relative
motion with respect to one another, the three-relative instantaneous center of
velocity are collinear.
(b) What do you mean by kinematic inversion of mechanism? Explain inversions
of double slider chain with neat diagrams.
(c ) In a slider crank mechanism, the lengths of the crank and the connecting rod are
200 mm and 800 mm respectively. Locate all I-centers of the mechanism for
the position of the crank when it has turned 300 from the outer dead center.
Also find the velocity of slider and the angular velocity of the connecting rod,
if the crank rotates at 40 rad/sec.

(a) In the mechanism, as shown in Figure, the crank OA rotates at 20 r.p.m.
anticlockwise and gives motion to the sliding blocks B and D. The dimensions
of the various links are OA = 300 mm; AB = 1200 mm; BC = 450 mm and CD
= 450 mm. For the given configuration, Determine : 1. velocities of sliding at B
and D, 2. Angular velocity of CD, 3. linear acceleration of D, and 4. angular
acceleration of CD.
(b) Determine the lengths of the links of a four-bar linkage to generate y = log 10 x
in the interval 1 ≤ x ≤ 10. The length of the smallest link is 5 cm. Use three
accuracy points with Chebyshev’ spacing.

(a) A cam with 30 mm minimum radius is rotating clockwise at 1200 rpm to give
the following motion to a knife edged follower:
Lift = 25 mm
Follower rises during 1200 cam rotation with constant acceleration motion
Follower to dwell for 600 cam rotation
Follower to return during 900 rotation with constant velocity
Follower to dwell for remaining period
Draw cam profile and find the maximum velocity and acceleration of follower
during ascent and descent.
(b) Derive relations to find velocity and acceleration of a roller follower moving on
the tangent cam, when roller is in contact with flank and nose.

(c) Two mating involute gears of 200 pressure angle have a gear ratio of 2. The

If the addendum on each wheel is such that the path of approach and path
of recess on each side are half of the maximum possible length each. Find:
• Addendum for pinion and gear
• Length of arc of contact
• Maximum velocity of sliding

d. A leather belt transmits 10 kW from a motor running at 600 rpm by an open-


belt drive. The diameter of the driving pulley of the motor is 350 mm, center
distance between the pulleys 4 m and speed of the driven pulley 180 rpm.
The belt weighs 1100 kg/m3 and the maximum allowable tension in the belt is
2.5 N/mm2. μ = 0.25. Find the width of the belt assuming the thickness to be
10 mm. Neglect the belt thickness to calculate the velocities.

(a) Figure given below shows the link mechanism of a quick-return mechanism of
the slotted lever type, the various dimensions of which are
OA = 400 mm, OP = 200 mm, AR = 700 mm, RS = 300 mm.
For the configuration shown determine the acceleration of the cutting tool at S
and the angular acceleration of the link RS. The crank OP rotates at 210 rpm.

i. In a Davis steering gear mechanism, find the inclination of the track
arm to the longitudinal axis of the car, when the car is moving on a
straight path. Given the distance between the pivots of the front axle is
1.0675 m and wheel base is 2.5925 m.

mechanisms used for straight line motion. Explain working of any one
with the help of suitable diagram.

maximum tension is not to exceed 2000 N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The
1.2 m pulley, which is the driver, runs at 200 r.p.m. Due to belt slip on one of the
pulleys, the velocity of the driven shaft is only 450 r.p.m. Calculate the torque on
each of the two shafts, the power transmitted, and power lost in friction. What is

angle. The addendum is one module. Does the interference occur? If it occurs, to
what value should the pressure angle be changed to eliminate interference?

for the clockwise and anticlockwise rotation of the drum; and 2. The value of

+52, -124, +92, -140, +85, -72 and +107 mm2, when the engine is running at a speed of
600 r.p.m. If the total fluctuation of speed is not to exceed ± 1.5% of the mean find the
necessary mass of flywheel of radius 0.5m.
(h) The measurements on a mechanical vibrating system show that it has a mass of 8 kg
and that the springs can be combined to give an equivalent spring of stiffness 5.4
N/mm. If the vibrating system have a dashpot attached which exerts a force of 40 N
when the mass has a velocity of 1 m/s, find : 1. critical damping coefficient, 2.

a) Describe forces on different parts of a slider crank mechanism.
b) The following data are given for a vibratory system with viscous damping: Mass = 2.5 kg;
spring constant = 3 N/mm and the amplitude decreases to 0.25 of the initial value after five
consecutive cycles. Determine the damping coefficient of the damper in the system.
c) A shaft carries four masses in parallel planes A, B, C and D in this order along its length. The
masses at B and C are 18 kg and 12.5 kg respectively, and each has an eccentricity of 60 mm.
The masses at A and D have an eccentricity of 80 mm. The angle between the masses at B
and C is 100° and that between the masses at B and A is 190°, both being measured in the
same direction. The axial distance between the planes A and B is 100 mm and that between B
and C is 200 mm. If the shaft is in complete dynamic balance, determine: 1. The magnitude of
the masses at A and D; 2. The distance between planes A and D; and 3. the angular position

b) The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 3500 kg. It has a radius of gyration of 0.45 m and a
speed of 3000 r.p.m. clockwise when looking from stern. Determine the gyroscopic couple
and its effect upon the ship: 1. when the ship is steering to the left on a curve of 100 m radius
at a speed of 36 km/h. 2. When the ship is pitching in a simple harmonic motion, the bow
falling with its maximum velocity. The period of pitching is 40 seconds and the total angular
displacement between the two extreme positions of pitching is 12 degrees.

1.55 m. Determine: 1. the fraction of the reciprocating masses to be balanced, if the hammer
blow is not to exceed 46 kN at 96.5 km/h. ; 2. the variation in tractive effort ; and 3. the
maximum swaying couple.

a) In a Porter governor, the upper and lower arms are each 250 mm long and are pivoted on the
axis of rotation. The mass of each rotating ball is 3 kg and the mass of the sleeve is 20 kg. The
sleeve is in its lowest position when the arms are inclined at 30° to the governor axis. The lift

of the sleeve is 36 mm. Find the force of friction at the sleeve, if the speed at the moment it
rises from the lowest position is equal to the speed at the moment it falls from the highest
position. Also, find the range of speed of the governor.
b) In a spring loaded governor of the Hartnell type, the mass of each ball is 1kg, length of
vertical arm of the bell crank lever is 100 mm and that of the horizontal arm is 50 mm. The
distance of fulcrum of each bell crank lever is 80 mm from the axis of rotation of the
governor. The extreme radii of rotation of the balls are 75 mm and 112.5mm. The maximum
equilibrium speed is 5 per cent greater than the minimum equilibrium speed which is 360
r.p.m. Find, neglecting obliquity of arms, initial compression of the spring and equilibrium
speed corresponding to the radius of rotation of 100 mm.

a) Explain and discuss following in detail with examples:
(i)Absorption type Brake Dynamometer; (ii) Transmission type Brake Dynamometer.
b) In a winch, the rope supports a load W and is wound round a barrel 450 mm diameter. A
differential band brake acts on a drum 800 mm diameter which is keyed to the same shaft as
the barrel. The two ends of the bands are attached to pins on opposite sides of the fulcrum of
the brake lever and at distances of 25 mm and 100 mm from the fulcrum. The angle of lap of
the brake band is 250° and the coefficient of friction is 0.25. What is the maximum load W
which can be supported by the brake when a force of 750 N is applied to the lever at a
distance of 3000 mm from the fulcrum?

flywheel with a mass of 3 KN has a radius of gyration of 1.6 m. Find the energy
stored in the flywheel when its speed increases from 315 rpm to 340 rpm.

b. A porter governor has all four arms 250 mm long. The upper arms are attached on
the axis of rotation and the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 30
mm from the axis. The mass of each ball is 5 kgand the sleeve has a mass of 50 kg.
The extreme radii of rotation are 150 mm and 200 mm. Calculate the range of speed
of the governor.

c. Discuss the effect of applying the brake to the vehicle when the brakes are applied to
rear wheel only and front wheel only.

d. Four masses A, B, C and D are attached to a shaft and revolve in the same plane.
The masses are 12 kg, 10 kg, 18 kg and 15 kg respectively and their radii of rotations
are 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm and 30 mm. The angular position of the masses B, C and
D are 60º, 135º and 270º from mass A. Find the magnitude and position of the
balancing mass at a radius of 100 mm. Analytically and graphically both.
e. Derive an expression for the natural frequency of free longitudinal vibration by

a. The crank and connecting rod of a vertical petrol engine, running at 1800 rpm are 60
mm and 270 mm respectively. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm and the mass of

turned 20° from the top dead centre, the gas pressure is 650 kN/m2. Determine the (i)
net force on the piston (ii) net load on the gudgeon pin (iii) thrust on the cylinder

mm apart. Determine the (i) mass A and its angular position with that of mass B (ii)
positions of all the planes relative to plane of mass A.

a. The following particulars refers to a Proell governor with open arms:
Length of all arms = 200 mm; distance of pivot of arms from the axis of
rotation = 40 mm; length of extension of lower arms to which all balls are
attached= 100 mm; mass of each ball= 6 kg and mass of central load = 50 kg.
If the radius of rotation of the ball is 180 mm when the arms are inclined at
an angle of 40º to the axis of rotation, find the equilibrium speed for the
above configuration.

b. In a spring loaded Hartnell type governor, the extreme radii of rotation ofthe balls
are 80 mm and 120 mm. The ball arm and the sleeve arm of the bell crank lever are
equal in length. The mass of each ball is 2 kg. If the speeds at the two extreme
positions are 400 and 420 r.p.m., find: 1.the initial compression of the central spring,
and 2.the spring constant.

a. The simple band brake as shown in figure1, is applied to a shaft carrying a flywheel
of mass 400 kg. The radius of gyration of the flywheel is 450 mm and runs at 300
rpm in anticlockwise direction. If the coefficient of friction is 0.2 and the brake drum
diameter is 240 mm. Given AO = 120 mm, OC = 300 mm, Find the torque applied
due to a hand load of 100 N and the number of turns of the wheel before it is brought
to rest.

(a) A loaded governor of the Porter type has equal arms of 250 mm long. The mass
of each ball is 2 Kg. When the ball radius is 150 mm, the valve is fully open
and when the ball radius is 185 mm, the valve is fully closed. Find the
maximum speed and the range of speed. If the maximum speed is to be
increased 20 % by an addition of mass to the central load, find what additional
mass is required?
(b) In a spring-controlled governor of Hartung type, the lengths of ball and sleeve
arms are 80 mm and 120 mm respectively. The total travel of the sleeve is 125
mm. In the mid position, each spring is compressed by 50 mm and the radius of
rotation of the mass centre is 140 mm. Each ball has a mass of 4 Kg and the
spring has a stiffness of 10 kN/m of compression. The equivalent mass of the
governor gear at the sleeve is 16 Kg. Neglecting the moment due to the
revolving masses when the arms are inclined; determine the ratio of the range
of the speed to the mean speed of the governor. Also find the speed of the
governor in the mid position.

(b) Explain the term “Critical or Whirling Speed” of a shaft. Prove that the

(a) A ship propelled by a turbine rotor, which has a mass of 5 tonnes and a speed
of 2100 r.p.m. The rotor has a radius of gyration of 0.5 m and rotates in a

1. The ship sails at a speed of 30 km/h and steers to the left in a curve
having 60 m radius.

(a) An instrument vibrates with a frequency of 1Hz when there is no damping. When
damping is provided , the frequency of damped vibration was observer to be 0.9 Hz.
Find the damping factor.
(b) Define – Stability, Sensitiveness, Isochronism, Hunting of governer.
(c) What do you understand by friction circle?
(d) Why are large flywheels required for shearing/punching processes?
(e) Differentiate b/w absorption & transmission dynamometer.
(f) What do you understand by open and cross belt drive?
(g) What is difference b/w gyroscopic & reaction couple?
(h) A ship has propeller of mass moment of inertia 2000 kg-m2. It rotates at 360 rpm in
clockwise sense looking from stern. Determine the gyroscopic couple & its effect when

(i) Explain governor effort & governor power.
(j) Draw controlling force diagram for porter governor & give its equation.

SECTION – B
2. Attempt any five parts of the following questions: 5 x 10 = 50
(a) The mass of an electric motor is 120 kg & it runs at 1500 rpm. The armature mass is 35
kg & its center gravity lies 0.5 mm from axis of rotation .The motor is mounted on five
springs of negligible damping, so that the force transmitted is one-eleventh of the
impressed force. Assume that the mass of the motor is equally distributed among 5
springs.
Determine 1)- stiffness of the spring 2)- the dynamic force transmitted to the base at the
operating speed 3)-natural frequency of system.
(b) For proell governor with open arms:- length of arm=200mm ; distance of pivot of arms
from the axis of rotation=40mm; length of extension of lower arms to which each ball
is attached=100mm; mass of each ball=6 kg; mass of central load= 150 kg; if the radius
of rotation of ball is 180 mm when the arm are inclined at an angle of 40 0 to the axis of
rotation, find the equilibrium speed for the above configuration.
(c) How do the effects of gyroscopic couple & centrifugal force make the rider of a two-
wheeler to tilt on one side? Derive the relation for the limiting speed of the vehicle. The
turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 2.2 tonnes and rotates at 1800 rpm clockwise when
viewed from left. The radius of gyration of the rotor is 320 mm. Determine the
gyroscopic couple & its effect when:
(i) The ship turns right at a radius of 250 m with a speed of 25 km/h.
(ii) The ship pitches with the bow rising at an angular velocity of 0.8 rad/s.
(iii) the ship rolls at an angular velocity of 0.1 rad/s
(d) A twin cylinder uncoupled locomotive has its cylinders 0.6m apart and balance weights
are 60o apart. The plane being symmetrically placed about the Centre line.For each

cylinder the revolving masses are 300 kg at pin radius of 320 mm & reciprocating parts
285 kg. All the revolving & 2/3 of the reciprocating masses are balanced. The driving
wheels are 1.8 m diameter. When the engine runs at 60 km/h , find a)-the swaying
couple , b)- the variation in tractive effort & c)- hammer blow.
(e) The equation of the turning moment curve of a three crank engine is (5000+1500Sin3θ)
N-m, where θ is crank angle in radians.The moment of inertia of the flywheel is 1000
kg-m2& the mean speed is 300 rpm. Calculate 1)- power of the engine , & 2)- the
maximum fluctuation of the speed of the flywheel in percentage when a)-the resisting
torque is constant and b)- resisting torque is (5000+600sinθ) N-m
(f) A vehicle moving on a rough plane inclined at a speed of 36 km/h has a wheel base 1.8
m. The centre of gravity of the vehicle is 0.8 m from the rear wheel & 0.9 m above the
inclined plane. Find the distance travelled by the vehicle before coming to rest & the
time taken to do so when (i) The vehicle moves up the plane, &
(ii) the vehicle moves down the plane .
The brakes are applied to all.
The coefficient of friction is 0.5.
(g) Derive expression for effort & power of a porter governor. & coefficient of
insensitiveness.

SECTION – C

3. In a spring loaded governor of the hartnelltype , the mass of each ball is 5 kg & the lift
of the sleeve is 50 mm. the speed at which the governor begins to float is 240 r.p.m ,
and at this speed the radius of the ball path is 110 mm. The mean working speed of the
governor is 20 times the range of speed when friction is neglected. If the length of ball
& roller arm of the bell crank lever are 120 mm & 100 mm respectively & if the
distance b/w the centre of the pivot of bell crank lever & axis of governor spindle is
140 mm, determine the initial compression of the spring taking into account the
obliquity of arms.If the friction is equivalent to a force of 30N at the sleeve , find the
total alteration in speed before the sleeve begins to move from mid-position.
4. A horizontal steam engine running at 120 rpm has a bore of 250 mm & a stroke of
400mm. The connecting rod is 0.6 m & mass of the reciprocating part is 60 kg when
the crank has turned through an angle of 45o from the inner dead centre , the steam
pressure on the cover end side is 550kN/m2& that of the crank end side is 70 kN/m2.
Consider the diameter of the piston rod equal to 50 mm. Determine, a)- turning moment
on the crank shaft , b)- thrust on the bearings & c)- acceleration of the flywheel if the
power of the engine is 20 kW, mass of the flywheel 60 kg & radius of gyration 0.6m
5. Four masses A, B, C and D are completely balanced. Masses C and D make angles of
90° and 190° respectively with that of mass B in the counter clockwise direction. The
rotating masses have the following properties:
mb = 30 kg, mc = 4o kg, md = 35 kg, and ra= 150 mm, rb = 200 mm, rc = 100 mm and rd
= 180 mm.
Plane B and C are 250 mm apart. Determine the mass A and its angular position with
that of mass B.

circular pitch, find the addendum.
c. The arms of a Porter governor are 300 mm long. The upper arms are pivoted
on the axis of rotation. The lower arms are attached to a sleeve at a distance of 40 mm
from the axis of rotation. The mass of the load on the sleeve is 70 kg and the mass of
each ball is 10 kg. Determine the equilibrium speed when the radius of rotation of the
balls is 200 mm. If the friction is equivalent to a load of 20 N at the sleeve, what will
be the range of speed for this position?
d. Find the relation for the coefficient of fluctuation of speed in terms of maximum
fluctuation of energy and the kinetic energy of the flywheel at mean speed.
e. A band brake acts on the 3/4th of the circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter
which is keyed to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 225 Nm. One
end of the band is attached to the fulcrum pin of the lever and the other end to the pin
100 mm from the fulcrum. If the operating force is applied at 500 mm from the
fulcrum and the coefficient of friction is 0.25, find the operating force when the drum
rotates in the
(i) Anticlockwise direction, and (ii) Clockwise direction.
SECTION C
3. Attempt any one part of the following: 7x1=7

(a) PQRS is a four bar chain with link PS fixed as shown in figure 2. The lengths of the
links are PQ= 62.5 mm ; QR = 175 mm ; RS = 112.5 mm ; and PS = 200 mm. The
crank PQ rotates at 10 rad/s clockwise. Draw the velocity and acceleration diagram
when angle QPS = 60° and Q and R lie on the same side of PS. Find the angular
velocity and angular acceleration of links QR and RS.

(b) Derive an expression for the magnitude and direction of Coriolis component of
acceleration.

(a) A cam is to be designed for a knife edge follower with the following data:

i. Cam lift= 40 mm during 90º of cam rotation with SHM.


ii. Dwell for the next 30º
iii. During the next 60º of cam rotation, the follower returns to its original
position with SHM
iv. Dwell during the remaining 180º.
Draw the profile of the cam when the line of stroke of the follower passes
through the axis of the cam shaft.
The radius of the base circle of the cam is 40 mm. Determine the maximum
velocity and acceleration of the follower during its ascent and descent, if the
cam rotates at 240 rpm.

(b) Define the terms pitch circle diameter, pressure angle, addendum, dedendum, circular
pitch, module and backlash related to gear.

(a) The crank and connecting rod of a vertical petrol engine, running at 1800 rpm are 60
mm and 270 mm respectively. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm and the mass of
the reciprocating partsis 1.2 kg. During the expansion stroke when the crank has turned
20° from the top dead centre, the gas pressure is 650 KN/m2. Determine the (i) net
force on the piston (ii) net load on the gudgeon pin (iii) thrust on the cylinder walls (iv)
speed at which the gudgeon pin load is reversed in direction.
(b) What is the function of flywheel? Derive the expression for maximum fluctuation of
energy.

6. Attempt any one part of the following: 7x1=7


(a) Four masses A, B, C and D are attached to a shaft and revolve in the same plane. The
masses are 12 kg, 10 kg, 18 kg and 15 kg respectively and their radii of rotations are
40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm and 30 mm. The angular position of the masses B, C and D are
60º, 135º and 270º from mass A. Find the magnitude and position of the balancing
mass at a radius of 100 mm. Analytically and graphically both.
(b) With a help of a neat sketch, explain the working of a porter governor and derive the
formula for the speed of the governor.

(a) What is the advantage of a self- expanding shoe brake? Drive the relation for the
friction torque for such a brake.
(b) Differentiate between brake and dynamometer. With a help of a neat sketch, explain
