GENETICS – DNA

Learning Goal:
I will understand genetic terms.

Success Criteria:
 Explain what DNA is.
 Explain what makes up DNA.

Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA)

 DNA is a molecule consisting of two chains of nucleotides which are
twisted in the shape of a double helix.
 DNA contains genetic material that is passed from parents to
offspring.
 DNA is made up of molecules called Nucleotides.
 Nucleotides are comprised of three types:
1) Phosphate group
2) Deoxyribose sugar
3) One of four nitrogen-rich bases
 Amino acids –> proteins –> living cells –> tissue –> organs –>
living things e.g., humans
 Amino acids are what create all living things.
 There are many diverse types of amino acids and when these diverse
types of amino acids come together like Lego, they create all the
living things in this world.
