TEST 2B
Reading
I Read the text and complete the gaps (1-5) with the sentences (A-G). There are two extra
sentences which you do not need to use.

Textspeak – Should we be using it?

After the invention of the first mobile phones, character limits on SMS messages meant that people began using
new, shorter forms of familiar words in order to save space. This is called textspeak. Now, in the Internet age,
people use instant messaging more often that SMS messages. 1 But what kind of effects is it having, and is it
harming our language?

There are several arguments in favour of using textspeak in our daily communication. Firstly, as technology has
developed, the way in which we communicate with one another has changed. 2 After all, the whole point of
things like instant messaging is to save us time in our day, and that time would be lost if we were forced to write
every message in long form. This means that textspeak suits the life of the average person today, and agrees with
our modern, fast-paced way of life.

Secondly, although it may seem like a modern issue, language has actually been changing for as long as it has
existed. There is evidence that people have been debating the evolution of language for thousands of years. For
instance, linguists have discovered evidence of Roman academics in the year 63 AD complaining that their
students were writing Latin in way that seemed strange and artificial. 3 Textspeak is simply one part of the
process through which our language develops. This process is something that is both unavoidable and also
completely necessary. After all, English would never have existed without it.

On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to using textspeak. It’s one thing for a teenager or an adult to
choose to use textspeak when they already have an understanding of their language, but it may cause issues for
those who constantly use it from a young age. For example, if someone uses textspeak from childhood, they may
never learn to use correct spelling and grammar. 4 There are many instances where textspeak is not so
useful, such as in job applications, where it is considered inappropriate, or in long-form written works, like novels
and articles, where too many abbreviations and acronyms can become confusing for the reader.
All in all, there are definitely two sides to the argument on textspeak. Having a good knowledge of our language is
important, but only because it gives useful options when communicating. 5 At the end of the day, language is
a tool for connecting with others. All that truly matters is that we understand one another.

A Textspeak is one of those choices, and we should feel free to use to when it suits our needs.
B As a result, textspeak is turning into a whole new language used in instant communication.
C Over time, this new form of Latin developed into the French language.
D Academics are divided over the usefulness of textspeak.
E It seems reasonable, then, that the language we use should also become different.
F There is evidence that textspeak helps young learners to develop their language skills.
G Consequently, this could harm their ability to express themselves properly in later life.
