Exercise 1: Horizontal Motion (5 marks)

A block of mass 7.2 kg moves from point ⃗𝑭
A with a speed of 2 m/s when a force of
80N is exerted on it at an angle of 30°
above the horizontal frictional surface
toward point B. The object reaches point B
with a speed of 8 m/s after 2 seconds.
1. Represent the remaining forces acting
on the block (not to scale). Figure 1
2. Calculate the acceleration.
3. Deduce the magnitude of the frictional force.
4. Calculate the kinetic energy at points A and B, denoted as KEA and KEB respectively.
5. Determine the variation in kinetic energy ∆𝐾𝐸𝐴 𝑡𝑜 𝐵 between points A and B.
6. Use the work-energy theorem and the position-time equation to calculate the distance from
A to B using two methods.
Exercise 2: Falling ball. (5 marks)
A ball of mass 0.2 kg falls from point A at t=0 from height
h=10m above the ground. It reached B after time t1. During
the motion of the ball the velocity time equation was:
⃗𝑽 = (𝟓𝒕 + 𝟐)𝒋
Take g=10m/s2 and the reference of GPE is 6m above the
ground as shown in figure 2.

1- Specify the acceleration and initial speed of the

ball.
2- Determine speed at B and time t1 needed to reach
point B.
3- Show that by newton’s 2nd Law that the ball is
subjected to air resistance of direction and Figure 2
magnitude to be determined

4- Calculate the mechanical energy MEA and MEB at A and B respectively.

5- Verify by using ∆𝑀𝐸𝐴→𝐵 = 𝑊𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 the calculated value of air resistance.

surface of a table, at the top of incline plane with inclination θ with sin θ=0.8 as shown in
figure 2.
The frictional incline is fixed on a table of height H = 2.00 m. Take g=10m/s2 and the
potential energy reference is the horizontal level of the table passing through point O.

The block reaches point O with speed 4m/s

then falls until reaches point B on the
ground.
1- Motion of the block between A and O GPE ref
in incline plane.

1.1- Represent the forces acting on the

block.
1.2- Calculate the acceleration of the block.
1.3- Deduce by applying Newton’s 2nd law
the magnitude of friction. Figure 3

1.5- Deduce the average speed of the block between A and O.
1.6- Calculate Mechanical energy at point A and O
1.7- Calculate the work of friction between A and O
1.8- Deduce that ∆𝑴𝑬𝑨→𝑶 = 𝑾𝒇
𝑨→𝑶

2- Motion of the block in the projectile part between O and B

Upon reaching the point O with speed VO=4m/s at t=0 as new origin of time and fall and hits the
ground at B. Neglect air resistance between O and B
⃗⃗⃗0 at point O
2.1- Calculate the initial velocity 𝑉
2.2- Determine the parametric equations of velocity and position vector
2.3- Determine the equation of trajectory and specify its type
2.4- Use equation of trajectory to determine the horizontal distance R at B as shown in the figure.
2.5- Calculate the speed at B.
2.6- Use conservation of mechanical energy between O and B to verify the calculated speed at B.
