AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE

What are the performance categories? A,B,C,D

What are they in reference too? Threshold speed

How are the performance categories classed? (Vref = 1.3x Vs)

What is the definition of a wet runway? more than 25 percent of the overall runway length
and width coverage or cleared width being used is covered by any visible dampness or water

Definition of flooded runway : there is extensive standing water

Type of aquaplaning, viscous, dynamic and everted rubber

Mass and Balance

Why do we calculate Mass and Balance: structural, stability, and T/O and landing
performance

What is the relevance of the Mass and Balance document? To know aircraft is within all of its
limits

What is BEM (Basic Empty Mass)? Weight of empty aircraft with basic equip and un- usable
fuel/oil

What is OM (Operating Mass)? DOM+fuel

What is DOM (Dry Operating Mass)? TOM-Payload

What is a moment arm? Force x distance

How would you load an aircraft for max range? With an aft CofG, lower drag/fuel
consumption

If you were responsible for loading and aircraft and wanted to achieve the most fuel efficient
flight where would you choose to put the cargo and why? Aft CofG, less drag

INSTRUMENTS

What is pitot pressure? Total pressure=static + dynamic

How does an ASI work? Measures difference between the total pressure in capsule
and static pressure in the case

How does an altimeter work? Measures static pressure which decreases with altitude
and expands capsule
What would cause an altimeter to malfunction? Blocked static port

You are at the end of the runway with the static ports blocked. What will be the
reading on the altimeter after departure? It will stay at the same reading

How does TCAS work? Interogates other aircrafts SSR to plot location and speed and
provides warnings as necessary

How does GPWS work? Receives data on config, alt/height, GS deviation and gives
warnings
What is EGPWS? Enhanced GPWS. New features like terrain mapping. Can warn of
wind shear

What does HUD stand for? Head-up Display

What are gyro flight instruments? Directional indicator, artificial horizon, turn and slip
indicator or turn coordinator.

Pressure flights instrument ? Airspeed, altimeter, vertical speed

EFIS ? Electronic flight instrument system

Electrical gyro keeps being erected ? Levelling and torque motor

Artificial horizon during forward acceleration ? Goes up

FADEC ? Full authority digital engine control

Airspeed indication block in a clim ? Increase

Green on the efis ? Selected or activated mode

How to increase the regedity of a gyro ? increase mass and rpm

Artifical horizon errors : Turning and acceleration errors

MCP MODE CONTROL PANEL

Input in GPWS: flaps, gear, radio altimeter, barometric altitude for rod

Mode display on weather radar ? :Expanded NAV, Expanded VOR/ILS, Map mode, Center
map mode
Input in ADC, static, dynamic pressure and TAT

Magenta on the efis : command information and weather radar information

What is gpws? Egpws?

GPWS stands for Ground Proximity Warning System. It is an aircraft safety system that
provides pilots with alerts and warnings if the aircraft is in danger of colliding with the
ground. GPWS uses various sensors and data inputs to monitor the aircraft's altitude, rate of
descent, and proximity to terrain. If the system detects that the aircraft is descending too
rapidly it will issue audible and visual warnings to alert the pilots so they can take corrective
action to avoid a collision.

EGPWS stands for Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System. It is an advanced version
of GPWS that incorporates additional features and capabilities to further enhance safety.
EGPWS utilizes a digital terrain database and GPS technology to provide more precise
terrain awareness and warning capabilities. It can also provide alerts for other potential
hazards, such as obstacles, terrain variations, and runway incursions. EGPWS is designed to
offer pilots improved situational awareness and greater protection against controlled flight
into terrain accidents.
