REFLECTION PAPER

On May 26, 2024, our Master in Education Major in Special Education

online class focused on essential topics related to Individualized Education
Programs (IEP) and strategies for teaching visually impaired students. This
session was particularly insightful as it was presented by two of our fellow
students who are also practicing teachers.

Teaching Strategies for Visually Impaired Students

The first topic, "Teaching Strategies for Visually Impaired (IEP)," was
discussed by Mr. Hansel Chua. Mr. Chua provided practical insights into how we,
as educators, can tailor our teaching methods to meet the needs of visually
impaired students. He emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive
classroom environment where visually impaired students can thrive. Here are
some key points from his discussion:
1. Use of Assistive Technology: Mr. Chua highlighted various tools and software
that can aid visually impaired students, such as screen readers, braille displays,
and magnification software. These tools help students access the same
information as their peers, promoting equality in learning opportunities.
2. Classroom Modifications: Simple adjustments in the classroom setup, such as
ensuring proper lighting and reducing clutter, can significantly enhance the
learning experience for visually impaired students. Mr. Chua also stressed the
importance of using high-contrast materials and tactile learning aids.
3. Collaborative Learning: Encouraging group work and peer support can help
visually impaired students feel more integrated into the classroom community.
Mr. Chua shared examples of how pairing students can be mutually beneficial.

4. Personalized Instruction: Recognizing that each visually impaired student has

unique needs, Mr. Chua advocated for personalized teaching strategies that align
with the students' individual IEPs.

What is IEP, and the Different Types of IEP

The second topic, "What is IEP, and the Different Types of IEP," was
presented by Mr. Milgene Carbonel. He provided a comprehensive overview of
IEPs and the crucial role of a case manager in implementing these plans. His key
points included:
1. Definition and Purpose of IEP: Mr. Carbonel explained that an IEP is a legally
binding document designed to meet the unique educational needs of students
with disabilities. It outlines specific goals, accommodations, and services
required for the student to succeed.
2. Types of IEPs: He discussed various types of IEPs, including those tailored for
different disabilities and educational settings. This section was particularly
enlightening as it illustrated the diversity in approaches and the need for
customization.
3. Responsibilities of a Case Manager: The role of the case manager is pivotal in
the IEP process. Mr. Carbonel outlined their responsibilities, including
coordinating with teachers, parents, and specialists to ensure that the IEP is
effectively implemented and regularly reviewed.

Reflection on the Session

Despite the class being cut short due to technical difficulties, the
presentations were rich in content and provided valuable knowledge that I can
apply in my own teaching practice. The discussion reinforced the importance of
adaptability and personalized instruction in special education.
The session also highlighted the collaborative nature of our profession.
Listening to Mr. Chua and Mr. Carbonel share their experiences and strategies
reminded me of the wealth of knowledge within our group and the importance of
sharing best practices.
In conclusion, the class on May 26, 2024, was a reminder of the
commitment required to meet the diverse needs of our students. I look forward to
continuing the discussion in our next session and further exploring these critical
topics.
