5 fun facts about the Roman Empire:

1. Concrete Innovations:
The Romans were master builders and developed a type of concrete that was incredibly
durable. Their secret ingredient was volcanic ash, which helped the concrete set
underwater and made structures like the Pantheon and aqueducts possible.
2. Roman Emperors and Purple:
Wearing the colour purple was a privilege reserved for Roman emperors and high-
ranking officials. Purple dye was extremely expensive to produce because it came from a
specific type of sea snail, making it a symbol of wealth and power.
3. Roman Roads:
The Roman Empire built an extensive network of roads totalling more than 250,000
miles. These roads were so well constructed that many are still used today. They were
crucial for military and administrative efficiency, as well as for trade and communication.
4. Public Baths:
Public baths, known as thermae, were a staple of Roman urban life. They were not just
places for bathing but also social and cultural hubs where people would exercise, relax,
and conduct business. Some large baths could accommodate thousands of bathers.
5. Gladiators and Safety:
Contrary to popular belief, gladiatorial combat was not always a fight to the death. Many
matches were highly regulated with referees, and many gladiators were trained
professionals who could have long careers. Death was not the goal, and it was often
avoided to preserve the investment in the trained fighters.
