Insulation and Winterisation Philosophy
Основные принципы изоляции и утепления N-ST-2000 Rev 1
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 The purpose of this philosophy, which is applicable to all Process and Utility
systems, is to define where Insulation and Heat Tracing will be employed for
Process, Equipment Protection and Personnel Protection purposes.
1.2 Insulation and tracing may be specified for the following reasons:
Acoustic Attenuation
Passive Fire Protection
Heat Conservation
Personnel Protection
Winterisation
Anti-Condensation
Cold Conservation
1.3 The use of Insulation and Heat Tracing shall be minimised as far as practical
during design by avoiding pockets and dead legs, etc. It should be noted that
the application of Insulation and Heat Tracing to systems increases inspection
and maintenance and also the likelihood of corrosion.
1.4 The following guidelines shall be used in the specification of Insulation and
Heat Tracing:
Minimum Ambient Temperature -40 °C
Hydrate Formation Temperature Determined by simulation for specific case
Oil Wax Formation Temperature (Cloud Point) 53 °C
2. INSULATION CATEGORIES
2.1 The following abbreviations shall be used in the Line Number, as appropriate,
to indicate the Insulation Category:
AC Anti-Condensation
AI Acoustic Insulation
AT Acoustic Insulation with Tracing (Note 1)
CI Cold Conservation
FP Passive Fire Protection
HC Heat Conservation
HCWX Heat Conservation with Tracing, including Winterisation
(Note 2)
PP Personnel Protection
NI Not Insulated
Note 1
Where a service has two applicable insulation criteria then the most onerous of each
shall apply. For example, the suction line to a centrifugal compressor may require
Heat Conservation with Heat Tracing (HCWX) and Acoustic Insulation (AI). If the
Acoustic Insulation has a lower thermal conductivity than the Thermal Insulation,
then the designated service would be ‘AI’.
Note 2
‘X’ denotes tracing temperature.

2.2 Areas requiring insulation categories ‘FP’ and ‘PP’ will be indicated on the
P&ID`s by the Process Group for guidance up to AFD issue. For post AFD
issues, the relevant disciplines, (Safety,Mechanical and Piping respectively)
shall be responsible for defining the detailed extent of these insulation
categories.
3. ACOUSTIC INSULATION
3.1 Acoustic insulation will be provided for all pipework and valves identified as
continuously or frequently generating sound pressure levels in excess of 85
dB at a distance of 1 metre during normal operation. The extent of acoustic
insulation will be defined as a result of a separate acoustic study.
3.2 Relief valve discharges and blowdown pipework will generally not be
considered for Acoustic Insulation.
5. HEAT CONSERVATION
5.1 In principle, all Vessels, Equipment and Piping which require the conservation
of process heat shall, as a minimum, be 'hot' insulated. This includes all
vessels, equipment and piping containing fluids which have been heated by
passing through heat exchange equipment, fluids from which process heat is
to be recovered, fluids which may become too viscous to flow if they cool to
ambient temperature and gases which have to be prevented from
condensing, where any of these effects will cause operational problems.

Insulation and Winterisation Philosophy

Insulation and Heat Tracing is required for all level bridles and
exposed instrument connections in waxy crude service. Instrument
connections in the gas space of crude oil containing vessels (such
as pressure transmitter tappings) shall be self draining to the
process vessel and shall be Insulated and Heat Traced.
For pumps in crude service, the pump suction line up to and
including the minimum flow bypass shall be Heat Traced and
Insulated to avoid cold start-up with excessive fluid viscosities.
Where hydrates due to cooling are a possibility, the heat tracing
temperature shall be set to maintain a 5ЀC differential above the
hydrate formation temperature. The hydrate formation temperature
will be determined by process simulation on a case by case basis.
6. PERSONNEL PROTECTION
6.3 The design will be in accordance with TCO document “Safety in Designs”
Section 5.0 as a minimum. However, Personnel Protection shall extend 2
metres above the deck or floor level and 1 metre laterally from areas
accessible to personnel during normal operations or maintenance.
6.4 Personnel Protection may be achieved by the use of either wire mesh/
expanded metal guards or insulation. The use of guards is preferred to
insulation as it avoids the possibility of ‘under lagging’ corrosion. Guards shall
be removable where access for maintenance is required.
7. WINTERISATION
7.1 Winterisation is designated with the code ‘HCWX’ where ‘X’ denotes the
tracing temperature.
7.2 Where fitted to water based systems, the heat tracing temperature shall be
5ºC (for frost protection). Tracing temperatures for other systems will be
specified in the line number.
7.3 In general, Winterisation will not be required for areas which are enclosed and
heated and therefore not subject to external ambient conditions.
7.4 Winterisation, with heat tracing where necessary, will be applied to systems in
accordance with the following guidelines:
• Pumps and piping in crude oil or viscous fluid service which are
located in an un-heated pump house shall be heat traced .

• Where heat tracing is required, new vessels and all piping shall
normally have ‘electric’ heat tracing. However, some oil piping may
require ‘steam’ tracing to avoid viscosity and cloud point problems and
such instances shall be specifically indicated on P&ID’s by the
Process Group.
7.5 Methods
• Avoidance of pockets and dead legs and design of piping and tubing
to be self draining.
7.6.2 All pipework and equipment liable to stagnant conditions shall have
provision for draining and flushing.
Lines downstream of the deluge valves are drained after operation and
testing and require no insulation. Lines upstream of the deluge valve shall be
traced.
Tanks containing water or water based liquids which could freeze under
minimum ambient conditions shall be insulated. Tracing should be provided
for instrument connections.
The Potable and Utility Water systems in exposed areas shall be Winterised.
Care shall be taken when specifying heat tracing on potable water lines to
eye washes and safety showers to avoid overheating. Electrical trace heating
should be used and the temperature maintained at 75 DegF (+ or - 10 DegF).
It must not exceed 95 DegF.
7.10.1 Stagnant liquids or dead legs which contain water shall be traced to
prevent freezing or hydrate formation.

7.13.1 Blowdown pipework and relief valve inlet lines that normally contain
gas in a service which is waxy or where hydrates can form shall be
traced.
The Fuel Gas system shall be winterised by Heat Tracing and Insulation.
8. ANTI-CONDENSATION
Cold lines passing through warm areas where condensation drips may cause a
problem shall be suitably insulated.

9. HOT SURFACES
No hot surface insulation has been identified. However, should it be required, then as
a minimum it will be in accordance with TCO practices
