My Life Reflects My Childhood

Throughout our childhood, we draw attention to experiences like losing your first tooth,

having your first friend, or your first day of school. Looking back on these events, we may

perceive them as random experiences, but we forget that all these experiences develop our

understanding of the world around us, and our interactions with others, and they contribute to

forming the person we are.

Our identities are greatly influenced by the structures in our families and all the

friendships we create. For some instances, one being the rocky relationship that developed

between my father and I, along with my sister moving, made me feel somewhat unstable and

abandoned. This resulted in me putting up some sort of emotional barrier around myself, to

avoid facing my feelings. These walls were first somewhat a good thing, because they

protected me from suffering or having to deal with the circumstances. But instead, they created

a pattern, where when I meet new people, I experience difficulty trusting them, and

consequently I am reluctant in wanting to develop close relationships. Furthermore, the

relationships in my life were further confused due to the influence of my father’s side of the

family, having a more sexist approach, leaving me a girl struggling internally and externally,

feeling alienated and alone.

The experiences that we have during our earlier years have a significant influence on our

identities and behavior that we show the world around us. The relationships we develop,

whether those with family or friends, affect our understanding of trust and mistrust, good and

evil, and whether we should be holding on to a person who is not good for us. The emotional

barriers we create can hold us back, but acknowledging the relationships that we have made

and learned from is essential in the development of use and future relationships ahead.
