B. Concurrent Requirements
(1) Additional service documents may apply to the components/propellers
affected by this Service Letter. Compliance with additional service documents
may be necessary in conjunction with the completion of the Accomplishment
Instructions in this Service Letter. Refer to the Hartzell Propeller Inc. website at
www.hartzellprop.com for a cross-reference of service documents.
C. Reason
(1) "F" flange propeller model hubs are susceptible to damage in the mounting
bore from improper installation technique.
(2) This type of damage has previously not been repairable and was considered
cause to retire the hub from service.
(3) The procedure in this Service Letter will permit repair for this type of damage to
the affected hubs when the hub bore does not meet check criteria identified in
Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A, Volume 3 (61-01-02).
(4) Regulatory action is not expected.

(1) This document provides Additional Maintenance Instruction (AMI).
(2) This Service Letter introduces an on-condition repair procedure for the affected
hubs.
(3) This Service Letter introduces the 104488 hub sleeve for use in the on-condition
repair procedure in this Service Letter.

C. Tooling
(1) Tooling is as needed to achieve the machining requirements detailed in this
Service Letter.

3. Accomplishment Instructions
A. Disassembly, inspection, and assembly of the propeller and propeller hub must
be performed by a propeller service facility licensed by a governmental regulatory
agency, e.g., FAA, EASA, CAA.
B. Disassemble the propeller in accordance with the applicable Hartzell Propeller
overhaul manual.
C. Disassemble the hub in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices
Manual 202A (61-01-02), Volume 3.
D. Prepare and modify the engine side hub half.
(1) For modification performed at other than hub overhaul:
(a) Remove the studs from the engine side hub half in accordance with
Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02).
(b) Remove the paint from the engine side hub half in accordance with
Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02).
(c) Proceed to section 3.D.(3).

(2) For modification performed in conjunction with hub overhaul:


(a) Follow the hub overhaul procedure in accordance with Hartzell Propeller
Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02) through the etching process
(before penetrant inspection).
1 Penetrant inspection of the engine side hub half may be
accomplished at this point, if desired, but is not required. Penetrant
inspection of the engine side hub half will be performed as part of the
modification process.
(3) Modify the engine side hub half:
(a) Use the existing bore and the hub parting line surface for machine set-up
with a runout of 0.001 inch (0.025 mm).
(b) Machine the hub bore to a new diameter of 2.751 +/- 0.001 inches
(69.88 +/- 0.025 mm) to a depth from the flange face of
0.575 +/- 0.005 inch (14.61 +/- 0.13 mm) with a corner radius of
0.015 +/- 0.005 inch (0.38 +/- 0.13 mm).
(c) Break the corner of the bore at the flange face with a 0.020 +/- 0.005 inch
(0.51 +/- 0.13 mm) by 45 degree chamfer.
(d) Surface finish of the bore must be 63 µ inches (1.6 µ meter) or better.
(e) Perform penetrant inspection of the engine side hub half in accordance
with Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02).
1 An indication is not permitted.
2 If an indication is present, retire the hub from service.
(4) For a modification performed in conjunction with hub overhaul:
(a) Complete the hub overhaul procedure in accordance with Hartzell
Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02).
(b) Proceed to section 3.E. for assembly instructions.
(5) For a modification performed at other than hub overhaul:
(a) Apply chemical conversion coating to the newly machined aluminum of the
engine side hub half in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices
Manual 202A (61-01-02).
(b) Apply paint to the engine side hub half in accordance with Hartzell
Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02).
(c) Proceed to section 3.E. for assembly instructions.

E. Assemble the hub in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices Manual 202A
(61-01-02), Volume 3, except:
(1) Apply a small amount of assembly grease CM 12 onto O-ring C-3317-145 for
ease of installation.
(2) Install the O-ring C-3317-145 in the OD O-ring groove of the sleeve 104488.
(3) Install the sleeve with O-ring into the bore of the engine side hub half.
(a) This is a press fit.
(b) The sleeve must be below the surface of the flange face. Refer to Figure 1.
F. Assemble the propeller in accordance with the applicable overhaul manual.
G. Make an entry in the propeller logbook to indicate hub modification in accordance
with this Service Letter.

H. At each subsequent overhaul:


(1) Disassemble the propeller in accordance with the applicable Hartzell Propeller
overhaul manual.
(2) Disassemble the hub in accordance with Hartzell Propeller Standard Practices
Manual 202A (61-01-02), except:
(a) Remove the sleeve 104488 from the engine side hub half during
disassembly of the hub and before any chemical processing.
(b) Remove and discard the O-ring C-3317-145 from the OD of the sleeve 104488.
(3) Inspect the sleeve 104488 in accordance with Table 1 in this Service Letter.
(4) Inspect the hub bore of the engine side hub half in accordance with Table 2 in
this Service Letter.
(5) After overhaul, assemble the hub in accordance with Hartzell Propeller
Standard Practices Manual 202A (61-01-02) and this Service Letter.
