Gear Profile Curves:

A gear's gear tooth profile describes the shape of its teeth. The gear tooth profile, or how the
gear meshes with other gears, has a big impact on the efficiency and performance of a gear
system. One side of a tooth in a cross section between the gear's outer and root circles is
called the tooth profile. Typically, it refers to the curve formed by the meeting point of a tooth
surface and a surface or plane normal to the pitch surface, like the axial, normal, or transverse
plane. Gear tooth profiles come in various varieties. The tooth profile selected will depend on
the specific requirements and the features of the gear system that are required.
Types of Gear Profile Curves:
The most common types of gear tooth profiles commonly used are as follows:
● Involute Gear Profile
● Cycloidal Gear Profile
Involute Gear Profile:
An involute gear profile means that the profiles of the gear teeth are involutes of a circle,
while the involute of a circle is the locus of a point on a piece of string as the string is
unwrapped from a circle. Mechanical gears with straight-sided teeth can operate smoothly,
loudly, and with a high load capacity. Applications for involute gears can be found in a
variety of industries, including robotics, industrial machinery, automotive, and aerospace.
They can be used for a variety of speed, torque, and load requirements because of their
adaptability.
Advantages:
● Smooth and uniform tooth engagement
● High efficiency
● Accurate tooth contact
● Self aligning capacity
Limitations:
● Limited load capacity
● Complexity in tooth profile design
● Limited contact ratio
● Sensitivity in manufacturing errors

Cycloidal Gear Profile:
A cycloidal gear profile is a type of gear tooth profile characterised by its unique shape,
resembling a cycloid curve. The teeth of cycloidal gears are usually produced by rolling
motion between a bigger gear, known as a wheel, and a producing gear, called a pinion. In
many different applications, including robots, printing presses, textile machinery, and other
precision equipment, cycloidal gears are a common choice because they provide smooth
motion, a high load capacity, and minimal backlash.
Advantages:
● Robustness and Durability
● Versatility
● Low backlash
● High load carrying capacity
Limitations:
● High friction and wear
● Lower transmission efficiency at high speeds
● Limited interchangeability
