Notes about the pattern:

• This pattern is written in US crochet terms

• You should have basic amigurumi skills and knowledge to make this pattern.
• This pattern is worked in spirals and rows
• Repeats will be indicated with **
• You can use yarn scraps for a running stitch marker (just avoid colors darker than the color you
are crocheting with – it can leave marks on your work!)
• We’ll use a modified whip stitch to attach the head (see photo tutorial)
• I will include the total number of stitches for the row/round at the end of each row/round in
parenthesis ()

Things to consider before you start:

Read the full pattern before you begin making your baby. This will help mitigate any mistakes and help
you prepare for what is next.

If you make a head full of curly hair for your baby, you will not be able to fit a hat on top. You could get
away with a few curls, but the hat works best on straight hair.

When you are working the head, make sure that you do not crochet too tight. This will result in a head
too small for the body.

When making the hat, you may have issues with the hat being too tight or too loose. We all have
different tension. When working the pattern, if the hat is too loose, go down a hook size. If it’s too
tight, go up a hook size.

Even though worsted weight yarns are supposed to be the same weight, we’ve noticed that not all are
created equal. Some worsted weight yarns are thicker than others. I am using Big Twist for the body
from JoAnn Fabrics. I highly encourage you to use the same brand, but if you don’t have any on hand,
Red Heart with Love, or I Love This Yarn is similar enough. I am using I Love This Cotton from Hobby
Lobby for the skin tone. You could also replace this with a worsted weight acrylic yarn, but make sure
that it isn’t too thick (like Red Heart Super Saver).

Let’s get started…

Using your F hook and yarn Color A (skin tone cotton yarn) work the following:

Round 1: Sc 6 into magic ring (6)

Round 2: Sc 2 into each stitch (12)
Round 3: *Sc 1, inc* 6 times (18)
Round 4: Sc 1, inc, * sc 2, inc* 5 times, sc 1 (24)
Round 5: *Sc 3, inc* 6 times (30)

Round 37: Sc 3, dec, *sc 6, dec* 5 times, sc 3 (42)

Leave a long tail of yarn for sewing and tie off. Stuff the body with Poly-fil to the top.

We will now sew the head to the body. When placing the head on the body, we will want the
head to tilt up a bit, so the cheeks show (see photo). *Tip: Use some pins to keep the head in
place while you sew the head to the body.

Sew the head in place using the modified whip stitch. Instead of placing your needle through the
top of the sc stich on the body, you will place your needle through the front “v” of the stitch. You
will then put your needle through the bottom of a stich on the head and pull through. When
attaching the head, you’ll want to pull through the front “v” of 2 stitches of the body at a time
more often than pulling through 1 stitch at a time, as there are more stitches on the width of the
top of the body than there are on the head. This will give a nice bubbly effect between the body
and the head. Sew in ends and trim remaining yarn.

Hair

Using your F hook and the yarn Color C that you’ve chosen for the hair color, work the following
to make hair strands:

Option 1: Curly

Strand One

Row 1: chain 15 and turn.

Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, sc 2 in each stitch across (28) DO NOT TIE OFF OR
CUT ENDS
You’ve now made one strand of hair! Continue below….

Strand Two

You should now be back at the bottom of your strand of hair. To make strand two, work the
following.

Row 1: Chain 15 and turn.

Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, sc 2 in each stitch across (28)

You’ve now made two strands of hair! Repeat the instructions for Strand 2 until you have the
amount of hair you’d like. Leave a long tail for sewing and tie off. As you can see, all the strands
are strung together and this will make it easy to sew onto the head when it’s time to assemble.

Option 2: Straight

Strand One

Row 1: chain 15 and turn.

Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, sc in each stitch across (14) DO NOT TIE OFF OR CUT

Blanket

Using Yarn Color B and H crochet hook, work the following stitches into a Magic Circle:

Row 1: Chain 3 (counts as first stitch) dc, chain 2, *dc 2, ch 2* 3 times. Sl st to top of chain 3. (8 dc
stitches, 8 chains)

Row 2: Slip stich to chain space to the left and work the following stitches in the ch sp: Chain 3, dc, ch
2, dc 2, ch 2. *In next ch sp, dc 2, ch 2, dc 2, ch 2*. Repeat * to * around. Sl st to top of chain 3 (16 dc
stitches, 16 chains)

Row 3: Slip stich to chain space to the left and work the following stitches in the ch sp: Chain 3, dc, ch
2, dc 2, ch 2. *In next chain space, dc 2 ch 2. In the next ch sp, dc 2, ch 2, dc 2, ch 2. This is your corner
stitch*. Repeat * to * 2 more times. In next ch sp, dc 2, ch 2 and sl st to top of chain 3.

Row 4: Slip stich to chain space to the left and work the following stitches in the ch sp: Chain 3, dc, ch
2, dc 2, ch 2. *In next 2 chain spaces, dc2 ch 2. In the next ch sp, dc 2, ch 2, dc 2, ch 2. This is your
corner stitch*. Repeat * to * 2 more times. In next 2 ch sp, dc 2, ch 2 and sl st to top of chain 3.

Row 5: Slip stich to chain space to the left and work the following stitches in the ch sp: Chain 3, dc, ch
2, dc 2, ch 2. *In next 3 chain spaces, dc2 ch 2. In the next ch sp, dc 2, ch 2, dc 2, ch 2. This is your
corner stitch*. Repeat * to * 2 more times. In next 3 ch sp, dc 2, ch 2 and sl st to top of chain 3.

Notice a pattern here? Continue onto the next row of your blanket increasing the bolded number in
each row. For Row 6, the bolded number will increase from 3 to 4. For Row 7, the bolded number will
be 5. Continue repeating the rows until your blanket measures at least 15 x 15 inches. This will ensure
that your blanket is large enough to swaddle your baby with.

Assembly

*Tip – use sewing pins to place eyes, ears and pacifier in place before sewing them on.

Eyes: Place eyes as shown in picture on 4th row above the increase row for the cheeks.
The dip of the eye should go into the 3rd row above cheek increase. Eyes should be 5-6
stitches apart.

Increase Row

Ears: Place ears 8 stitches away from eyes. The tip of the ears should be on the same
row as the eyes.
P a g e | 13

Nose: Take a 10ish inch piece of skin colored yarn and use your blunt end needle create
to a nose by threading the yarn under and over three stitches 1 row above the cheek
increase. I did 4 under and overs for the nose thickness. Don’t pull too hard on the
nose so that it puckers the face. It shouldn’t be too loose either so that the loops hang
down.

Pacifier: The Pacifier should be one row beneath the nose.

P a g e | 14

Hair: Take your strand of hair and arrange it as you like on the top of the head. You can
work the hair in a circular pattern, or zig zag it back and forth across the head.

Once all your pieces are in place with the pins and you are happy with how they look,
time to sew them on. Use the whip stitch for the ears, pacifier and hair. For the nose,
simply weave in the ends. For the eyes, weave your needle in and out in the middle of
your chain to secure the chain to the face (see photo). Once it is secure, pull your extra
thread through the head towards the top and sew in the ends inconspicuously.
P a g e | 15

If you will be giving this to a young child and worry about the pieces being lost, you can
attach the hat/headband and blanket by sewing the pieces to the head and body. If not,
you can make as many different colored accessories for the baby to wear for
imaginative play.
