My setup:
Tenor saxophone: Selmer MKVI 82xxx
mouthpiece is an old Otto Link Babbit - refaced from opening 6 to
opening 8/8,5
Alto - The Martin Alto
Soprano - Yanagisawa Elimona
3x KEY CHANGE IN 3 BARS
To go through this progression you need to change the key 3 times

YOU MUST HEAR THIS TO PLAY IT

Listen carefully to get a fluent good sounding line going to minor from
major

Confirmation - circle Em7 - A7 - Dm7 G7

In so many tunes you will find the progression III - VI dominant - II-V
dominant.
Gmajor - C major - F major
THE CHALLENGE IS TO CHANGE THE KEY
The difficult part here is being ready to change the key.
And actually hear the key change and resolve the chords in a beautiful
sounding way.

That same challenge occurs in the bridge of Invitation

D#m7 G#7 C#maj7
D#m7 G#7 C#m7
II-V TO MAJOR GOING TO MINOR

Where you get the major II-V in the key of C# major

But you resolve to minor
The minor chord - in this case - C#m7 belongs to Bmajor

YOU MUST GET USED TO HEAR THE KEY CHANGE

The most important thing is to hear the key change.

SIMPLIFY FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND FASTER

APPLICATION
In this example I leave out the G7 and the C7 to make the sound as
simple as possible.
In this way the understanding and the road to getting to use the sounds
much faster.

CONSTRUCT SIMPLE LINES USING SCALE AND DIATONIC

CHORDS
The thing to do is start making clear lines - run up the chords and scales.

PLAY SLOW RUBATO

You do not really have to think of voice leading - just play the right notes.
I also play the lines kind of rubato to get the most focus on the sound of
the key change.
THE BRIDGE OF INVITATION
#P invitation bridge
In bridge of Invitation we get the same challenge
We need to change the key when resolving the chord to minor.

When working with the keychange we need to focus on what actually

changes.
Comparing the C# major scale and the B scale the B# and the E#
changes into the B and the E in the B major scale
Play this multiple times to hear it

When making lines a great way to get into the new key is using the tones
that change to resolve to the new key.

RESOLVING THE E# TO E
In this line emphasizing the E# resolving to the E
RESOLVING B# to B
Here I use the B# to make a natural resolution to B.

To get a faster and easier start everything is written out in 12 keys.
Pick your favorite.

USE ALTERATIONS TO GET MORE LEADING TONES

In the lick from the start of the video I went into using the first alterations
to get more leading tones to the new key.

BORROW THE b9 AND b13 FROM HARMONIC MINOR

You can borrow the b9 and the b13 from the harmonic minor scale.

When using the harmonic minor scale on a dominant play the scale from
the 6th degree.

MAKE YOUR CHORD EXERCISES INTERESTING

And always remember to check out and use the chords in the scale.

Here using both the b9 and the flat 13

PATREON
In the Lesson manual on Patreon you will find much more scale
exercises and licks using the b9 and the b13.
Check out the easy download - link in the description.

THE ALTERED SCALE GIVES YOU NEW LEADING TONES AND

TARGET NOTES
A third option to get new leading tone and target note options into the
mix is playing the altered scale.

THE ALTERED SCALE ON G#7 IS A MELODIC MINOR

The altered scale on G#7 is the A melodic minor scale played from the
7th degree

Giving you these alterations.

ALWAY PRACTICE THE CHORDS - AND MAKE IT FUN PRACTICE
Always remember to check the chords - make some fun - play them
down from the 7th adding a nice rhythm to it.

CHECK OUT THE WHOLE TONE PART OF THE ALTERED SCALE

Look for the oddities in the scale that makes a great sound
Here I use the whole tone part of the altered scale.

LOOK FOR THE INTERESTING ARPEGGIO SOUNDS

Going all in on the arpeggios that gives me that altered sound.

PATREON

ALMOST ALL THE NOTES ARE LEADING TONES

When looking at the G# altered scale next to the C#m7 scale we see
there are lots of leading tones.
Almost all the tones can lead a half step down.
LEARN THE LEADING TONES AND THE TARGET NOTES
But some essentials are also the same - like the E - the third of the
C#m7 and the B the 7th of the C#m7

37-1 green _ target notes

Make sure you lead towards your target notes on that dominant.
