Kingdom of Velu Nachiyar
The Legacy of Queen Velu Nachiyar lies behind the name
of First Queen in India .She fought against British to not
enter and not to make any people on her kingdom suffer
from British.

Her kingdom is “THE RAMNAD KINGDOM” which is

now parts of sivaganga.
Her parents were Raja Chellamuthu vijayaragunatha
Sethupathy and Rani Sakandhimutha who was ruling the
Ramnad Kingdom.

She was born in 3 January 1730.Her spouse is Muthu

Vaduganatha Periyavudaya Thevar. He was killed in a
battle with EIC soldiers in 1780 at KalaiyarKoil.

After death of her husband , Velu nachiyar tookover the

kingdom. She was convincing other kingdoms to battle
against British. After 8 years, with full plan Haider Ali
Sultan of Mysuru(Mysore) gave her 5000 soldiers and
weapons needed for the battle.
The main part is here ‘Kuyili’ the commander of Velu
nachiyar fighting against British and immersed herself in
ghee and lit her up in British war warehouse. This turned
to be one of the main reasons for Velu nachiyar Victory .

saga spread around the world.
