NATURAL SELECTION-EPISODE 1

REVIEW QA

1. Natural selection is a mechanism of evolution. Organisms that are more adapted to their
environment are more likely to survive and pass on the genes that aided their success. Therefore,
modern cheetah adapted to run faster for survival. Hence this trait led to evolution

2.Fossilised armadillos were having smaller front claws. Over the period of time armadillo
started digging insects out of the soil. Natural selection helped this organism to develop bigger
front claws and this trait (adaptation ) led to evolution. Hence modern armadillos are with bigger
front claws.

3.Only black colour mice will be left after a few generation.

4.Ex.Wheat grain size, fruit shape and size, plant height, farm yield, transformation of aquatic
plants to land plants(vascular tissue development)

5.a.From year1700 to 1840,

Black moth changed in population from 1 to 90 and white moth changed in population from 99
to10

b.White moths

c.As the tree trunk turns black ,black moth will be camouflaged on its surface and birds will not
be able to spot them easily.Hence it will lead to increase in their population.

6.As they get better adaopted to their surroundings by developing survival traits like fast runners,
sense of smell, camouflage and get protected from their predators. And animals having no
survival traits will die.

7.No.As this trait is not useful for survival of moths

8.As drought has caused increase in no.of large and hard seeds ,only birds having larger beaks
will survive and birds with smaller beaks will die because they can’t eat large and harder seeds.

9.we can see change in size, colour, horns, spots ,tail changed over the period of time(students can
explain the difference from given picture)
10.Darwin stated that organisms best suited for their environment are the most successful in
surviving and reproducing. The heritable traits are useful to pass these characters to next
generation and it leads to evolution .Example –long necked giraffe, fast running deer
