r The Consul r e c e i v e d an unevaluated r e p o r t that B r a z i l i a n P r o t e s t a n t m i n i s t e r

have r e c e i v e d i n v i t a t i o n s to v i s i t Cuba.

The F a c u l t i e s of D e n t i s t r y and L a w a r e supposed to have active n u c l u i

of l e f t i s t s . Yet he noted on the h i g h concrete w a l l s u r r o u n d i n g the F a c u l t i e s
of L a w and Philosophy that someone had painted i n l a r g e l e t t e r s "Down w i t h
C a s t r o " , "Down w i t h C G T " , "Down w i t h U P E " . W e r e l e f t i s t students as active
as c l a i m e d , one would expect to see some evidence of t h e i r slogans at least
on the school w a l l s but i n d r i v i n g about none w e r e o b s e r v e d . I n fact, no effort
had been made to o b l i t e r a t e the above mentioned w r i t i n g s .

R e l i a b l e r e p o r t s indicate that p r i n c i p a l efforts a r e being made i n t h i s area

to influence a g r i c u l t u r a l w o r k e r s to j o i n the l e f t i s t f a r m w o r k e r s u n i o n s .
T h e r e are as yet no r e p o r t s on the f o r m a t i o n of "Groups of E l e v e n " i n the a r e a .

Conversations h e l d w i t h v a r i o u s fazendeiros d i d not b r i n g to l i g h t any

fear they m i g h t have about t h e i r h o l d i n g s . They expressed the opinion that
i t would be best to w a i t for the 1965 n a t i o n a l elections to make a change r a t h e r
than to take p r e m a t u r e a g r e s s i v e a c t i o n s . H o w e v e r , should the need a r i s e ,
there i s no doubt that they would support the U D N , w h i c h i s the strongest
p a r t y i n the a r e a .
