GAUHATI UNIVERSITY POST GRADUATE ENTRANCE TEST (PGET-2024)
Gauhati University is inviting online applications through the Gauhati University website admission portal
(https://onlinegu.in) from intending eligible candidates to appear in the Gauhati University Post Graduate Entrance Test
(PGET)-2024 in order to be admitted to the following academic programmes at Gauhati University and its Affiliated

N.B.: Besides this above, it is to be noted that-
(i) Candidates who appeared/appearing in the 6th Semester B.A./B.Sc./B.Com/B.Voc
Examinations, 2024 and are waiting for their results are eligible to appear in the PGET-2024
and get provisional admission if selected. However, the candidates must submit the Final
Gradesheet/Marksheet within 7 days of the result being declared. Failure to do so will result in
the withdrawal of their seat.
(ii) Candidates appeared/appearing in the 6th Semester B.A./B.Sc./B.Com/B.Voc Examinations,
2024 and waiting for their results but have backlog in earlier Semester(s) are also eligible to
appear in the PGET-2024 and get provisional admission if selected. However, the candidates
must have to submit the Final Gradesheet/Marksheet within 7 days of the result being declared.
Failure to do so will result in the withdrawal of their seat.

Tentative Schedule for Entrance Tests (PGET-2024)
An applicant can appear in the Gauhati University Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET-2024) in a
maximum of 3 (three) subjects. They can choose only ONE subject from Traditional Programmes and TWO
subjects from Interdisciplinary Programmes. Additionally, candidates should not apply for more than one
subject from the same session on the same date as mentioned in the following schedule for entrance tests:

a) The PGET-2024 will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions with four options each, carrying 1
mark for each correct answer.
b) The duration of the exam will be 02 hours.
c) For each incorrect answer, 0.25 (zero point two five) marks will be deducted.

Application/Entrance Test Fee to be paid by an Applicant:


a) If an applicant applies for one PG programme, the application fee will be Rs. 1000/-; for two
programmes, the application fee will be Rs. 1500/-; and for three PG programmes, the
application fee will be Rs. 2000/-.

b) Application fees can only be paid online (by debit card, credit card, or internet banking). The
link to the payment gateway will be provided in the online application portal.
c) The application form will be considered finally submitted only after the application fee has
been successfully paid by the applicant and an online receipt has been generated confirming
payment.

Selection Procedure:
A. All candidates must appear in the PGET-2024 to get admitted to any postgraduate
programmes at Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges.
B. The selection of eligible candidates for PG programme admission will be solely based on PGET-
2024 scores. Furthermore, the selection and admission will be considered provisional until the
relevant documents/certificates (in their original form) are produced before the respective
department where admission is being sought at the time of admission.
C. Preference for admission to the relevant programme will be given to candidates who obtain higher
marks in the PGET-2024.
D. Seat reservations will be made following the guidelines established by the Government of Assam
and Gauhati University.
E. Merely appearing in the Entrance Test (PGET-2024) does not confer any right to the
candidate for admission to a programme. If a candidate does not meet the minimum eligibility
criteria during the document verification of the admission process, his/her candidacy will be
cancelled.

Seat Reservation Policy:
A. Seat reservation policy for the Traditional Programmes of the University for the Academic Session
2024-25 will be as follows:
a) Reservation of 70% of seats for Gauhati University candidates
b) Reservation of 30%of seats for Other University candidates
 Furthermore, there will be exceptions for M.Sc. in Geology programme, where the seat
reservation ratio will be 30 (for GU candidates): 70 (open for all Universities including
GU candidates)

B. Seats in the Interdisciplinary programmes of the University remain open to all candidates irrespective
of their university affiliation.

 Other Reservation of seats shall be as per Government of Assam rules and as per provision of Gauhati
University.
1. Statutory Reservation:
(I) Scheduled Caste: 7%
(II) Scheduled Tribes (Plains): 10%
(III) Scheduled Tribes (Hill): 5%
(IV) OBC & MOBC: 27% (As per the letter from the director of Higher Education Govt. of Assam (Ref. no:
DHE/EG/Misc/79/2023/14 dated 20-07-2023), the reservation of seats for OBC/MOBC community is being
enhanced from existing 15% to 27% and this reservation is applicable for the NON-CREAMY LAYER
candidates of OBC/MOBC community only. In addition, the reservation of seats for candidates belonging to
Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi and Tea Tribe Community will be within 27% of OBC/MOBC
reservation. Additionally, there will be a Community wise special reservation of six communities within the
27% reserved seats for OBC/MOBC community as per Govt. of Assam Notification (Ref. no:
DHE/EG/Misc/79/2023/14 dated 20-07-2023). As per this provision, a total of 07 seats for Ahom
community, 06 seats for Tea Garden community, 06 seats for Koch Rajbongshi community, 05 seats for Chutia
community, 06 seats for Moran community and 05 seats for Matak community are reserved within the 27%
reserved seats for OBC/MOBC community in Gauhati University.

(V) Differently-abled: 3% of the total seats in each Discipline of Faculty are reserved for differently-abled
students/persons with benchmark disabilities (with not less than forty per cent of a specified disability).
Candidates applying for consideration under this category must submit a Medical Certificate issued by the
Joint Director of Health Services of the district concerned. Students applying for reservation under this
category must submit a prescribed form for this purpose in the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, G.U.
Candidate must appear in a Medical Board constituted for this purpose when called for.

(VI) Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 10% seats are reserved for the Economically Weaker Sections
(EWS) in each Academic Programmes. As per the Government of Assam Office Memorandum, No.
ABP.07/2019/3 dated 2nd February, 2019, the eligibility norms for the EWS, is as below:

1. Persons who are not covered under the existing sections of reservations for the Scheduled caste, the
scheduled Tribes and OBC/MOBC and whose family has Gross Annual Income below Rs. 8.00 lakh (Revised
as per the Government of Assam Office Memorandum No: ABP.07/2019/16, dated 31st December, 2019) are to
be identified as EWS for the benefit of reservation. Family for this purpose will include the person who seeks
benefit of reservation, his/ her parents and sibling below the age of 18 years as also his/her spouse and

children below the age of 18 years. The income shall include income from all sources, i.e. Salary, agriculture
business, profession etc. and it will be income for the Financial Year prior to the year of application.
Also persons whose family owns or possesses any of the following assets shall be excluded from being
identified as EWS, irrespective of the family income—(a). Agriculture Land more than 15 Bigha in rural area;
(b). Residential land in rural area more than 1 Bigha; (c). Residential plot in notified Municipal
corporation/Municipal Board/ Town Committee Area more than 1.5 Katha; (d). Residential Built up area
more than 1000 Sq. ft. in notified Municipal Corporation/ Municipal Board/ Town Committee.

2. The income and assets of the families as mentioned above (Sl. No. 1) will be required to be issued by an
officer not below the rank of Circle Officer.

2.Non-Statutory Reservation Quota:

(I) Sons and daughters of permanent GU Employees: 1(one) seat in each Academic department with
intake capacity 40 or less and 2 (two) seats when the intake is more than 40 students on supernumerary
basis. Student applies for reservation under this category must submit a prescribed form for this purpose in
the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, G.U.

(II)Sons and daughters of Retired GU Employees: A total of 5 (five) seats are reserved irrespective of all
academic departments as supernumerary basis. Student applies for reservation under this category must
submit a prescribed form for this purpose in the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, G.U.

(III) Fringe Village: A total of 15 (fifteen) seats are reserved irrespective of all academic departments as
supernumerary basis.
Applicants must be sons/daughters of the residents of the fringe villages, viz. Garigaon, Sadilapur, Katiadalang
(North Jalukbari) and Sundarbari. Applicant’s fore-fathers must be the residents in these villages at the time
of inception of Gauhati University. Student applies for reservation under this category must submit a
prescribed form for this purpose along with the land ownership documents of the parents and the NRC Data
of 1951, in the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, G.U.

(IV) Extra Curricular & Co-Curricular Activities: 1(one) seat in each Academic department as
supernumerary basis. Eligibility of this quota lies on the basis of the performance of the candidate in the
field of Sports/Art/Culture. Proficiency in Extra Curricular & Co-Curricular Activities in the last 3 years
preceding graduation (earlier than three years before the academic session in which admission is sought) will
be considered for this purpose. Candidate must have represented Gauhati University/State (Assam) in any of
the Olympic disciplines or other sports/ Cultural activities conducted by the Association of Indian
Universities (AIU), New Delhi/National Sports Federation as recognized by the Sports Authority of India
(SAI)/Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India/ any other organization recognized by
the Competent Authority. (Selection will be made by a committee constituted by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor,
GU).

(V)N.C.C.: A total of 3 (Three) seats are reserved irrespective of all academic departments as supernumerary
basis. Candidate must have represented the State (of Assam) in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi
sponsored by the Regional Directorate, N.C.C. or having N.C.C. ‘C’ certificate. NCC certificates obtained in the
last 3 years preceding Graduation will be considered for this purpose.

(VI)N.S.S.: A total of 2 (Two) seats are reserved irrespective of all academic departments as supernumerary
basis. Candidate will be selected on the basis of possession of the certificates (obtained in the last 3 years
preceding Graduation) placed below in order of weightage:

2. State Level NSS Awardees

3. Member of the Indian Youth Delegation Team (International Youth Exchange)

(VII) Sons and daughters of Ex-Defense Person: 1(one) seat in each Academic department as
supernumerary basis.

N.B.

i. Under Non-statutory quota, if there is more than One eligible candidate for any of the supernumerary seats
mentioned above (from sl. No. II-VII), only one candidate will be selected per category for each programe
except Sl. No. I.

ii. Candidates seeking admission under Non-statutory quota and Differently abled categories shall have to fill
an additional prescribed form available in the website of Gauhati University along with the print copy of their
application and other required testimonials duly self attested and submit the same to the Room No- 14, Office
of the Secretary University Classes, Gauhati University, Jalukbari, Guwahati-781014 in person or by post
before commencement of the entrance Test.

iii. Candidates seeking admission under general / statutory reservation category including EWS are
requested to submit concerned certificates to the Departments/Institutes/Centers concern at the time of
Admission.

iv. Candidates seeking admission under reserved seats must be permanent residents of Assam (PRC must be
produced at the time of Admission).

Admission Procedure:
A. Admission to all Academic Departments of Gauhati University shall be held in 2 days (on first day the
Traditional Subjects and on Second day the Interdisciplinary Subjects). The Schedule and procedure for
admission shall be notified in the Gauhati University website (https://admissions.gauhati.ac.in/home) and
Samarth portal (https://onlinegu.in) along with the list of the provisionally selected candidates prepared by
the concerned department and approved by the Admission Committee of Gauhati University.

B. The admission and other fees to be paid at the time of admission shall be received through online payment
system of Gauhati University.

C. Fee Waiver scheme: The University provides Fee Waiver Scheme to eligible candidate as per Govt. of
Assam Office Memorandum No: 490303/2024/9, dated. 01-0602024. Under this scheme, (i) students whose
parental annual income is less than Rs. 2.00 lakh from all sources will be eligible to avail this scheme; (ii) if
either of the parent (mother or father) of the student is working in the State Govt./Central Govt./ Semi
Govt./State or Central Govt. undertakings, such students shall not be eligible. As per Higher Education
Department, Govt. of Assam notification, Income certificate issued by the Circle Officer (competent revenue
official)/Head of the Institute from where the student has passed out or Notary/Affidavit in respect of annual
income will be accepted for this purpose of granting Fee Waiver in admission. The fee waiver scheme will be
applicable to the eligible candidate for M.A/M.Sc./M.Com course only. The candidate admitted under
M.Lib.sc/M.Tech./M.B.A./L.L.M. etc. programmes are not eligible for fee waiver scheme.

D. Selection shall be made on the basis of merit in the concerned Entrance Test on a competitive basis. In case
of a tie, candidates shall be selected on the basis of the performance in last Board/Council/University
examination.

E. Candidate having more than 5 (five) years of study gap from the qualifying degree at the time of
application, will not be eligible for admission. Gap certificate issued from the Gazetted Officer or Head, last
attended institution must be submit (in original) at the time of admission in the concerned department.

F. The Affiliated Colleges of Gauhati University shall announce their own admission schedule as per their
convenience. A list of admitted students will be sent to the Office of the Secretary, University Classes, GU after
completion of the admission process of each programe by the Affiliated Colleges.

IMPORTANT:

*Candidates are advised to frequently visit the official website of Gauhati University (www.gauhati.ac.in) and
(https://onlinegu.in) for up-to-date Information/Notification issued from time to time.

* Candidates are advised to register themselves in the Government of Assam Higher Education department
admission portal, i.e. Samarth portal (https://assamadmission.samarth.ac.in/) for availing the Govt.
scholarship/grants/fee wave etc. in due course of time.
