UNIT 12 – VOCABULARY

epidemiology – the study of patterns and distribution of disease in a population


affluent – rich, wealthy
model – a theory or idea
whistle-blower – someone who reveals or exposes a problem in an organization
crank – someone who is considered odd or eccentric because of their opinions
stand up to – to confront or resist someone in courageous way
throw yourself into everything – started doing sth without thinking too much
just get on with it – join in enthusiastically
argumentative /ˌɑːɡjuˈmentətɪv/ – person who likes arguing or often starts arguing
co-operative /kəʊˈɒpərətɪv/ – involving doing something together or working together with
others towards a shared aim
easygoing /ˌiːzi ˈɡəʊɪŋ/ – relaxed and happy to accept things without worrying or getting
angry
pleasant /ˈpleznt/ – friendly and polite
arrogant /ˈærəɡənt/ – behaving in a proud, unpleasant way, showing little thought for other
people
insecure /ˌɪnsɪˈkjʊə(r)/ – not confident about yourself or your relationships with other people
modest /ˈmɒdɪst/ – not talking much about your own abilities or possessions
shy /ʃaɪ/ – nervous or embarrassed about meeting and speaking to other people
bold /bəʊld/ – brave and confident; not afraid to say what you feel or to take risks
brave /breɪv/ – willing to do things that are difficult, dangerous or painful; not afraid
courageous /kəˈreɪdʒəs/ – showing courage
terrified /ˈterɪfaɪd/ – very frightened
cold /kəʊld/ – without emotion; not friendly
friendly /ˈfrendli/ – behaving in a kind and pleasant way because you like somebody or want
to help them
outgoing /ˌaʊtˈɡəʊɪŋ/ – liking to meet other people, enjoying their company and being
friendly towards them
sociable /ˈsəʊʃəbl/ – enjoying spending time with other people
anxious /ˈæŋkʃəs/ – feeling worried or nervous
assertive /əˈsɜːtɪv/ – expressing opinions or desires strongly and with confidence, so that
people take notice
independent /ˌɪndɪˈpendənt/ – confident and free to do things without needing help from other
people
self-confident /ˌself ˈkɒnfɪdənt/ – having confidence in yourself and your abilities
irresponsible /ˌɪrɪˈspɒnsəbl/ – not thinking enough about the effects of what they do; not
showing a feeling of responsibility
mad /mæd/ – very angry
sensible /ˈsensəbl/ – able to make good judgements based on reason and experience rather
than emotion; practical
wild /waɪld/ – full of very strong feeling
