 An STCW certificate is a document that proves a seafarer has met the minimum training and

certification requirements set out to sea

internationally recognized rules that direct the knowledge and skills mariners need to perform their jobs
safely. Any mariners working aboard ships that operate in international waters must hold STCW
endorsements.

 Endorsements meaning = seal of approval


 What are the 5 certificates of STCW?
 The modules are personal survival training, firefighting, first aid and CPR, personal safety and social
responsibility, and proficiency in security awareness.

An STCW certificate includes:

 Certificates of competence
 Endorsements
 Certificates of proficiency
 Any documentary evidence showing that a requirement of the convention has been met

 Part A of the Code is mandatory. The minimum standards of competence required for
seagoing personnel are given in detail in a series of tables. Part B of the Code contains
recommended guidance which is intended to help Parties implement the Convention.
