GMO : from promises to controversies

Some people think that developing GMO crops could have many advantages. In the future,
the planet will have to feed more and more people and GMO can provide a stable supply of
food. Indeed, by being more resistant to natural catastrophes GMO could make us
independent from climate conditions. It would contribute to reduce hunger, to boost
economies and hence trigger more political stability and fewer conflicts over food.
However, all is not positive and some people remain doubtful. The first GMO sold in the US
has not contributed to increase food production nor limit climate change yet. For example,
the GM rice currently used emits more methane than traditional rice, which enhances global
warming. Researchers are working on new drought-resistant and environment-friendly crops
but they will not be available before a decade or two. What’s more, GMO seem to be
dangerous for health and nature. Some people and animals have developed allergies and
people are afraid of suffering genetical modifications and having physical abnormalities. GMO
cultivation has also boosted the use of chemicals and pesticides and consequently hyper-
resistant weeds have multiplied. Finally, as the GMO development is mainly in the hands of
Monsanto, people fear this monopoly on food production may indebt small farmers in the
long run.
