2 Introduction
2.1 Task
Using the MAFIS (Mitutoyo Airfoil Inspection System) airfoil analysis you can
examine the most common characteristics of airfoils and evaluate and output the
measurement results. The complicated procedures were simplified by a dialogue
support that focuses on the airfoils.
To get to the airfoil analysis, use our software package MCOSMOS as an option
of SCANPAK in the GEOPAK-Editor or in the learn mode via the menu function
"Contour / Airfoil analysis". During operation you can consult an extensive Online
help.
You can calculate different characteristics of the airfoil. The MAFIS command
generates variables containing the results. The variable names are defined via
the dialogue and you have the possibility to tolerate the main results.
Furthermore you have all conceivable options, including graphic outputs (ill.
below) or flexible protocols.
Ö First select the "Mean camber line" function and then the "Maximum
thickness" function.
Ö In the "Protocol features" group, click on the graphic button.
Ö Look at the now enabled "Maximum thickness" dialogue (see ill.
below). Here you can choose, which result data shall be generated.
2.3 Result
Now, the result variables and the tolerance of the maximum
thickness are generated.
The result is shown in a graphic.
The generated mean camber line contour is stored in the temporary
COSMOS folder ("MAFISMCL_test001.gws").
3 Best fit
Task
You want to calculate the shift and rotation values to best fit an
actual airfoil contour into the corresponding airfoil nominal contour.
You want to view the graphic representation of a contour tolerance
comparison.
Sequence
Ö Load an airfoil nominal contour.
Ö Open the dialogue "Airfoil analysis" and deactivate the graphic
button and all other check boxes.
Ö Select the actual airfoil and activate the check box "Best fit" and the
nominal contour.
Ö Now also click on the graphic check box "Tolerance comparison
contours" underneath and set the tolerances for the contour
comparison.
Ö Finally you go to the menu selection "Complete" and adapt the
settings of the dialogue (ill. below) following the descriptions in
chapter "General principle".
Ö If the best fit results shall be applied to the actual contour, click in
the main dialogue also on the check box "Apply result to actual
airfoil".
The "Tolerance comparison contour" graphic will now compare the
best fitted actual contour with the nominal contour instead of a direct
comparison of the actual with the nominal contour. Confirm.
Now you have to carry out all actions of the first two chapters for the three
contour pairs, each consisting of actual contour and nominal contour. The names
of the result variables now start with "test002_" and "test003_", depending on the
number of the loop execution.
5 Flexible Protocol
5.1 Example with a protocol output
The previous example shall now be combined with a protocol output.
The sequence
Ö Load, e.g. three actual (memory numbers 1 – 3) contours and three
corresponding airfoil nominal contours (memory numbers 4 – 6).
Ö In the dialogue "Store graphic for template", the element graphic is
stored under "View no." 1.
Ö Add your comments.
Ö The graphic is shown on the first page of the MAFISBF-protocol.
Ö Open the dialogue "Open protocol".
Ö Load the MAFISBF-template.
Ö Activate the check box "All tolerance comparisons".
Ö As output destination, choose e.g. a pdf-file and confirm.
