CS-3 CenterScribe

This CS-3 CenterScribe is made of anodized aluminum

and steel screws. The CS-3 CenterScribe is used to scribe
accurate lines (center line or offset line) on rectangular
stock and find accurate centers on cylindrical stock quickly.
It can be used for making mortise and tenon.

For rectangular stock:

Allowed max. stock width: 7-7/8”
Max. Scribing offset distance: 1/2”
For cylindrical stock:
Allowed min. stock diameter: 25/64”
Allowed max. stock diameter:7-7/8”

Knob A: Used for locking the Adjustable Jaw.
Knob B: Used for locking the Scribe Point.
Knob C: Used for locking the pencil.
Knob D: Used for locking the left and right arms.

Note: The CS-3 has been factory calibrated to ensure the

utmost in accuracy, any adjustments or removals of all the
fasteners are forbidden.

Set Up and Use

1.Select the scribing way (Fig. 1)

Lines can be scribed with either a pencil or with the

scribe point. Decide the scribing way before use the
CenterScribe. (Using the scribe point can achieve a
more accurate line.)
a. Using the scribe point: Loose the knob B, adjust
the point to make a light scratch with the supplied 1.5
mm hex wrench, then lock the knob B.
b. Using the pencil: Make sure that the scribe point has
been retracted and the pencil tip is sharp enough. Mount
the pencil into the pencil pocket (standard hex pencils,
round pencils and many mechanical pencils can be
mounted). Then tighten the knob C to lock the pencil.

Note: If the scribe point or the pencil protrudes too far from
the body, it will be difficult to scribe a line.
2. Scribe on the rectangular stock
a. Scribing the center line
Clamp the rectangular stock in a vise and loosen the knob
D (Fig.2). Pull out the left and right outriggers (cold gray) to
both sides (the distance must be larger than the width of
stock ). As shown in Fig.2, close the outriggers jaws, and
hold them against both faces of your stock as you pull the
CenterScribe towards you, then you can get an accurate
center line on the rectangular stock. (There is no need to
lock the knob D in this operation.)

Note: The right arm assembly features an adjustable jaw

with laser etched graduations in both imperial and metric.
When scribing center line, make sure that the graduation
on the adjustable jaw is located at 0, as shown in Fig. 3.

b. Scribing the offset line

The CS-3 CenterScribe can be used for making mortise
and tenon. Adjust the relative distance between the right
outrigger and adjustable jaw to make the graduation equal
to the width of the desired mortise/tenon, lock the knob D
(Fig.1), as shown in Fig. 5. The scribe will be offset by 1/2
of the mortise/tenon, scribe twice by opposite directions to
get the the width of your desired mortise/tenon, as shown
in Fig. 6.

Note: When scribing the offset line, the knob D (Fig. 1)

must be locked.

Positioning the Center of Dowel

To determine the center of a dowel, position the dowel in
the V-type opening and squeeze the outriggers around it.
Press the body downward (Higher positioning accuracy
can be achieved by rotating the CS-3 along the circle of the
dowel) to position the center of dowel, as shown in Fig. 4.

Care and Maintenance

Clean
After using, wipe the tool clean with a damp cloth.

Lubrication
Periodically lubricate the pulleys by using light
lubricant, such as WD40.

Maintenance of scribe point

Periodically check the scribe point to ensure its sharpness.
We recommend that the points be chucked in a hand drill
or drill press and dressed with a stone while the point is
spinning, using oil or water as lubricant depending upon
the abrasive.
