Year 5 -10 Parent Teacher Online Interviews

Half Yearly Parent Teacher Interviews will be held online using Microsoft Teams from 2.00–8.00 pm on
Tuesday, 2 July 2024 and from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm on Friday, 5 July 2024. Please set aside some time on
these days as it is expected that all families will make appointments to discuss your son’s progress with
teachers. The online nature of the meetings makes it possible for parents to participate in these
interviews from home, the workplace or even from holiday locations.

Bookings are made using the Sentral Parent Portal, available on the School’s website. You can also use
the Sentral Parent Mobile App to make a booking. More information on accessing the interviews will be
sent out via email to parents and students in the lead up to 2 July 2024.

Your son’s Half Yearly Report will be made available on the Parent Portal on Monday, 1 July 2024. Your
son’s teachers will be discussing the results of this report in the interviews.

If you require any technical support in accessing the Sentral Parent Portal, please email the School’s IT
Help Desk, helpdesk@cbhslewisham.nsw.edu.au.

Please note that there will be morning classes on Tuesday, 2 July 2024 until dismissal at 12.30 pm and
there will only be Year 12 classes held on Friday, 5 July 2024.
Respectful Relationships

Year 7 participated in the CBHS Respectful Relationships Program on Wednesday, 12 June 2024. This
bespoke program allows CBHS to educate our young men in a specific and age appropriate manner to
ensure they have the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the legal and moral challenges in the
changing world of contemporary relationships.

Multicultural and Diversity Day (MAD)

An important touchstone for our school is being an inclusive community that welcomes all cultures and
celebrates diversity. Today we gathered and prayed in eight different languages and listened to our
seniors identify their cultural background and why they think multiculturalism is important.

We celebrated the scores of cultural identities with Year 7 alone having more than 50 cultural
backgrounds. It was a great occasion to launch the 2024 Lewo Futsal World Cup with the opener being
Greece versus Lebanon and the McDonald centre shook to the cheers of the different sides. The Greek
side marked themselves as potential winners with an impressive opening win. Each side will play three
games before the finals series.

Student Eyecare Program

The school is pleased to announce that the Student Eyecare Program will be running at the school in
Term 3, 2024. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours to provide students with a free
comprehensive eye examination that is covered through Medicare Australia.

One in six students have eye conditions that go undetected. This is due to the high level of visual
demand on their eyes from books, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Every student will receive a full
report about their eye health and a prescription will be provided if glasses are required. The prescription
can be taken to any optical store to get the glasses made. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity.

Red Dirt Pre-Immersion Gathering

CBHS Lewisham students and staff will undertake the week-long Red Dirt Immersion in north-western
New South Wales in Week 10. Accompanied by a group of students from our brother EREA school St
Pius X College, they will spend time on Country learning about Aboriginal heritage and culture in
Conabarabran, Brewarrina, the Warrumbungles, Bourke and Dubbo.

To prepare for the upcoming immersion, the group visited St Pius X College (Oxford Falls Campus) on
Wednesday, 12 June 2024.

Students and staff engaged in a range of activities to gain information about the immersion. This
included:

- Prayer & Acknowledgement of Country

- Ice breaker in groups

- Introduction to Red Dirt – our aims and desires

- Preparing ourselves for interactions appropriately engaging with the school

communities and local communities

- Interactions and engagement with Aboriginal Communities – “Being on Country” –

cultural sensitivities, protocols and practices

- Reflection and sharing session

We thank the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club for their generous contribution through ClubGRANTS
NSW who make this immersion experience possible.

Students will share about the Immersion experience with the school community in Term 3 at the NAIDOC
assembly

2024 Magee House Winter Appeal

Today's Assembly saw the launch of the Magee Winter Appeal for 2024. This year’s focus is the working
homeless, those in our community who suffer through tough and shivery nights while still trying their
absolute best to make ends meet during the day. As a Magee House, we are aiming to make these less
fortunate members of our community feel that little bit more warmer and valued this winter.

How can we do this? You can bring in any of the following items:

• Packaged Foods

• Canned Food

• Toiletries

• Clothing Items

We are launching this initiative today and it will run through to Wednesday, 3 July 2024 (Week 10). That
means over the coming weeks, any items brought into school can be taken to the Social Justice Room
(G35) during Homeroom, once you have had your name marked off by your Homeroom Teacher. Primary
boys, members of the Social Justice Committee will be coming around to classes every morning and
collecting any donations you have.
Please ensure that all food items are not due to expire for at least the next 6 months and all items must
be non-perishable and undamaged. Similarly, please ensure blankets and warm clothes are in new and
clean condition.

Please check daily notices as all information will be published each day until the final collection day. Also
keep an eye out for posters around the school. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to
Mr Williamson at any time. A reminder that this is a whole school initiative that all members of our
community can be involved in.

Thank you on behalf of the Magee House in advance for your generous support of this initiative and
lending a hand to those in the community this Winter.

Sydney Catholic Schools Chess Competition

Nineteen CBHS Lewisham students represented the school at the Sydney Catholic Schools Chess
Competition. There were 8 other local schools in our conference and up to 16 teams competing in each
division. After 7 rounds of chess we had a team from each division awarded a medal and the
opportunity to progress to the next stage in the representative competition.
These teams were:-

Juniors : Bada Kang, Apurv Parkhe, Stephen Eap (finished 3rd)

Intermediates : Alessandro Mollica, Phoenix Reiterbauer, Alec Rodrick (finished 2nd)

Seniors : Jack Welchman, Daniel Rowe, Allan Bechara (finished 2nd)

Our remaining teams were extremely competitive throughout the day with some only narrowly missing
out on a top 3 spot in the final round of the competition. Our teams demonstrated great sportsmanship
throughout the event.

Mrs Deahna Sheerin

Debating
I can confirm that CBHS Lewisham has five teams progressing to the finals.

The 10A team will debate St Andrew's College on Wednesday, 19 June 2024 and if successful, will move
on to Elimination 3 on Friday, 21 June 2024.

The 7A team will debate Loreto Kirribilli on 21 June 2024. If successful, they will join the 9As, debating
Marist College Dundas, and 10Bs, debating St Mary’s Cathedral College, at Lewisham in the quarter-finals
on 28 June 2024.

There are a few busy weeks ahead!

Careers
Work Experience

Recently our Work Studies classes completed school work experience with students gaining insight into
their working lives and the many opportunities available to them. One of our students, Finlay Cameron
of Year 11 enjoyed a wonderful experience at the Theatre Royal in Sydney. The Operations Manager, IIga
Horvat and her team organised an amazing week for Finlay with a highlight being shadowing the Stage
Manager for an evening performance of “Death of a Salesman”. Many students have been reporting
back a great experience and my appreciation goes out to all hosts who have generously taken on one of
our young men to experience their workplace.

Library Monitors

The Waterford Learning Centre is an extremely busy place for our students and staff each day. The WLC
staff greatly appreciate the assistance we have from our library monitors, Amogh Jha, Year 5 and Oliver
Kolotas, Year 8.

They have provided us with invaluable help, especially during our busy break times. Tasks such as
returns, shelving, cleaning and tidying the library are carried out by these boys. They are often asked by
fellow students for assistance with printing or finding a book. Recently, our famous ‘end of break’
warning bell was polished by Oliver.

The bell has an interesting history at Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham with it being used to call
the Christian Brothers to dinner when they used to live at the school. A story we have been told about
the dent on one side of the bell, occurred when a burglar broke into the Christian Brothers’ living
quarters and one of the Brothers threw the bell at him, narrowly missing the burglar and hitting the wall.
On behalf of our school community, I wanted to say a huge thank you to these boys for giving up their
time to help.

Sport
Both Representative and House Sport were back this week with the good weather combining with some
great football results. The results this week were:

Training will continue on Wednesday after school next week with the SCS competition continuing on
Thursday. Please see next week’s Semi Final Draw for Football and Competition draw for Rugby League,
however I ask parents to be aware that the draw, being live, is subject to change at short notice,
depending on weather and venue availability. Families are also reminded that boys must be playing in
full playing gear, including official team shorts and socks, that are available from the uniform shop.

Families are also reminded that as teams travel in pairs to matches, each team is expected to watch their
partner game and both teams will be dismissed at the end of the second game. For all “away” games, full
private coach transport will be provided. A reminder to all families that students are not permitted to
drive independently to any games where school transport is provided and should request the permission,
in writing, from the Principal for consideration, in the case of exceptional circumstances only.
Term 2

A reminder to all families that training occurs EVERY WEDNESDAY after school, and that training is
compulsory for all players. Any student who has difficulty attending must see Mr Foti to arrange a
solution suitable to both parties, which may include an early finish. Training focusses on team building
and tactical preparation and awareness, so families need not fear about players leaving tired for their
club sessions afterwards.

Training details for Winter Sport are:

Boys not involved in the representative teams will play recreational sports within their year groups on
Thursday afternoon with boys returning to school for dismissal at 2.45 pm. Boys in House Sport may
leave directly from the venue at approximately 2.25 pm with the written permission of
parents/carers. Please note that House Sports venues may change on a weekly basis depending on
ground availability, so families and students should pay close attention to any changes when they
become available.
