1- Explicitly derive the following electromagnetic formulae:

a- For a scalar field V, show that the curl of the gradient of any scalar field vanishes, i.e ∇ ×
∇𝑉 = 0. What is the physical explanation of that phenomenon?
b- Starting from the potential difference definition between points A and B as schematically
given below;
⃗⃗
𝑬
A
B

Define a closed path between A and B and then, using Stokes’s theorem prove that the electric
field intensity E is said to be conservative. Furthermore, prove that the gradient of potential V equals
to the electric field intensity ⃗𝑬.

c- In free space, if the potential is defined to be 𝑉 = 𝑟3 sin 𝜃 cos 𝜙, derive electric field
intensity ⃗𝑬 and volume charge density 𝝆𝒗 and find their values at (𝑟, 𝜃, 𝜙) =
(4, 𝜋⁄6 , 𝜋⁄3). Furthermore, find electrostatic energy density 𝒘𝑬 at that specified
parameters.

2- A spherical shell of outer radius 𝒃 surrounds an uncharged cavity of radius 𝒂 < 𝒃 as shown in the

figure below. If the shell is 𝝆𝒗𝟎 being a positive constant determine ⃗𝑫
