Primary damper
1 Description
Dampers for intercepting and regulating primary fumes is located at the end of the cooling piping. It is butterfly
type; it is not cooled.
Dampers are operated electrically with the modular actuator.
Flow of gas generated in the furnace during the melting varies in accordance with the different phases which
together characterize the technological cycle (oxygen injection, burners, electric energy, etc.). In order to avoid
the escape of fumes from the furnace, the latter is kept slight under pressure, by adjusting the opening of the
dampers.
If the pressure decreases, the valve increases the opening; if the pressure increases the valve is shuttered.
These regulation loops can be activated or if they are deactivated, the valves will move to a fixed position, which
can be set through the HMI (percentage of fixed opening) only based on the various furnace stages (melting,
slagging, refining and tapping).

Close interlocks
Melting phase
Damper is opened with a shutter which is under a continuous state of adjustment. The minimum opening of the
damper must be in the order of 70%. An opening of less than 70% is not considered open for the purposes of
plant safety.
De-slagging phase
Damper is opened with a shutter which is under a continuous state of adjustment. The minimum opening of the
damper must be in the order of 15%. An opening of less than 15% is not considered open for the purposes of
plant safety.
Charging phase
Damper is closed in this phase.

Refining phase
In order to reduce the energy consumption during this phase, it is necessary to reduce the depression in the
combustion chamber, with respect to that during the melting phase. This can be done using the damper by
obtaining a lesser amount of suction from the furnace. In this way there is an increase in pressure downstream
of the valve and consequently an increased suction flow from the canopy hood resulting in reduction of the fume
temperature at the filtering units. A drastic fume temperature at the filtering units is to be avoided for obvious
motives relating to thermal stress. Therefore, to reduce the suction flow it is necessary to reduce the depression.
Therefore, during the refining phase, the depression transmitter of the combustion chamber takes on a new set
point of 40 -100 mm H2O (which is different to that during the melting phase) and, on the basis of the same, it
operates in a proportional manner in a similar way during the melting phase.
