STRUCTURE OF ATOMS

 DALTON’S ATOMIC THEORY

In 1808, Dalton presented his atomic theory

to explain the properties of matter. Dalton’s
atomic theory of matter become one of he
foundations of modern chemistry.
He mentioned in his theory that atoms
are indivisible , but further it was proved
wrong as atoms are divisible and consist
of charged particles.
 Discovery of electron
J.J. Thompson identified electron in his
cathode ray experiment
Cathode ray experiment
Thompson passed electricity at high
voltage through a gas at very low pressure
taken in a discharge tube. Streams of
minute particles were given out by the
cathode (negative electrode). These
streams of particles are called cathode
rays(because they come out of cathode).
Cathode rays consist of small negatively
charged particles called electrons.
 Characteristics of an electron

Mass of an electron= 9*10-31 kg

Charge on electron=1.6*10-19 C
Relative charge on electron= -1

Discovery of protons
The existence of protons in the atoms
