1. Solve the pair of linear equations by both Elimination Method and Substitution Method

3. Sum of the digits of two digit number is 9. If the digits reverse their places the new number so
obtained is 27 more than the original number, find the number.

8. Two places A and B are 200 km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B
at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5
hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two
cars?
9. Yash scored 40 marks in a test, getting 3 marks for each right answer and losing 1 mark for
each wrong answer. Had 4 marks been been awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks
been deducted for each incorrect answer, Yash would have scored 50 marks. How many
questions were there in the test?
10. The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 9 square units, if its length is reduced by 5 units and
breadth is increased by 3 units. If we increases the length by 3 units and breadth by 2 units, the
area increases by 67 square units. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
11. Aruna goes to a fair with Rs. 20 and wants to have rides on the Giant Wheel and play Hoopla.
The number of times she plays Hoopla is half the number of rides she takes on the Giant
Wheel. If each ride costs Rs. 3 and a game of Hoopla costs Rs. 4, represent the equations and

12. The coach of a cricket team buys 3 bats and 6 balls for Rs.3900. Later she buys another bat
and 3 more balls of the same kind for Rs.1300. Represent the situations algebraically.

13. A fraction becomes 3 when 1 is subtracted from the numerator and it becomes 4 when 8 is
added to its denominator. Find the fraction.

14. The sum of two given numbers is 40. If the smaller number is doubled, it becomes 14 more
than the larger number. Give the algebraic equation and find the solutions graphically.

15. Draw the graphs of the equations: 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 1 = 0; 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 12 = 0. Determine the co-
ordinates of the vertices of the triangle formed by these lines and the x-axis and shade the
triangular region. Also calculate the area of the triangle so formed. Similarly find the vertices
of the triangle formed by these lines and y-aixs. Also find its area. Ans. 7.5 m²
16. In a given fraction if the numerator is multiplied by 2 and the denominator is reduced by 5, we
get 6/5. But if the numerator of the given fraction is increased by 8 and the denominator is

doubled we get 2/5. Find the fraction. Ans. 𝟐𝟓

17. If a room were 2m longer and 3m broader, the area would have increased by 75 sq. m. If it
were one metre shorter and 2m broader, the area would have increased by 16 sq. m. Find its
length and breadth. Ans. 15m, 12m
18. A person invested some amount at the rate of 12% simple interest and the remaining at 10%.
He received yearly interest of Rs. 130 but if he had interchanged the amounts invested, he would
have received Rs. 4 more interest. How much money did he invest at different rates?

19. A two digit number can be obtained by either multiplying sum of the digits by 8 and then
adding 1 or by multiplying the difference of the digits by 13 and then adding 2. Find the

20. In a competitive examination, one mark is awarded for each correct answer and ½ mark is
deducted for each incorrect answer. Mahi answered 120 questions and got 90 marks. How
many questions did she answer correctly? Ans. 100

21. If we buy two tickets from station A to station B and three from station A to C, we have to pay
Rs.795. But three tickets from station A to B and five tickets from station A to C cost a total of
Rs.1300. What is the fare from station A to B and from A to C.

26. It takes 12 hours to fill a swimming pool using two pipes. If the pipes of larger diameter is
used for 4 hours and the pipe of smaller diameter for 9 hours, only half the pool can be filled.
How long would it take for each pipe to fill the pool separately. Ans. 20hrs, 30hrs

27. A bird flying in the same direction as that of the wind, covers a distance of 45km in 2hrs
30min. But it takes 4hrs 30min to cover the same distance when it flies against the direction of
wind. Ignoring the conditions other than the wind, find the speed of bird in still air and speed
of wind. Ans. 14km/hr, 4km/hr

28. The speed of a boat in still water is 10km/hr. If it can travel 26km downstream and 14km
upstream in the same time. Find the speed of the stream. Ans. 3km/hr
29. Justify whether the system of linear equations 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 9 = 0 , 4𝑥 + 6𝑦 − 18 = 0 is
consistent.

30. In a bag containing only white and black balls, half the number of white balls is equal to one-
third of the number of black balls. Also, two times the total number of balls exceeds three
times the number of black balls by 4. Find the number of balls of each type in the bag.

31. Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6. If 8 is subtracted from each of the numbers, the ratio

33. Malini can row downstream 30 km in 2 hours, and upstream 10 km in 2 hrs. Find the speed of
rowing in still water and speed of current.

152𝑥 − 378 𝑦 = −74, − 378𝑥 + 152𝑦 = −604
35. Meena went to a bank to withdraw ₹2000. She asked the cashier to give
her ₹50 and ₹100 notes only. Meena got 25 notes in all. Find how many
notes ₹50 and ₹100 she received.
36. Anuj had some chocolates, and he divided them into two lots A and B. He sold the first lot at
the rate of ₹2 for 3 chocolates and the second lot at the rate of ₹1 per chocolate, and got a total
of ₹400. If he had sold the first lot at the rate of ₹1 per chocolate, and the second lot at the rate
of ₹4 for 5 chocolates, his total collection would have been ₹460. Find the total number of
chocolates he had.
CASE STUDIES
37. Amit is planning to buy a house and the layout is given below. The design and the
measurement has been made such that areas of two bedrooms and kitchen together is 95 sq.m.

Based on the above information, answer the following questions:


1. Form the pair of linear equations in two variables from this situation.

2. Find the length of the outer boundary of the layout.


3. Find the area of each bedroom and kitchen in the layout.
4. Find the area of living room in the layout.
5. Find the cost of laying tiles in kitchen at the rate of Rs. 50 per sq.m.
38. It is common that Governments revise travel fares from time to time based on various factors such
as inflation ( a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money) on different types
of vehicles like auto, Rickshaws, taxis, Radio cab etc. The auto charges in a city comprise of a fixed
charge together with the charge for the distance covered. Study the following situations:

Situation 1: In city A, for a journey of 10 km, the charge paid is Rs 75 and for a journey of 15 km, the
charge paid is Rs 110.

charge paid is Rs 145.
Answer the following questions considering above situations;
(i) If the fixed charges of auto rickshaw be Rs x and the running charges be Rs y km/hr, then write the
pair of linear equations representing the situations.
(ii) A person travels a distance of 50km. what amount he has to pay?
(iii) What will a person have to pay for travelling a distance of 30km?
