& INNOVATION UPDATES

Lithium-metal batteries can double the EV range

Researchers at Stanford University
have developed lithium metal battery
technology, potentially doubling the
range of electric cars to 800 to 1130km
(500 to 700 miles) on a single charge.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which
use graphite anodes and lithium metal
oxide cathodes, lithium-metal batter-
ies employ electroplated lithium metal
for the anode, significantly boosting
energy storage capacity. However, these
batteries face a challenge: their energy
storage capacity rapidly declines after a
few charge-discharge cycles, primarily
due to forming a solid electrolyte inter-
phase (SEI) matrix that captures isolated
lithium metal fragments. The team dis-
covered a simple yet effective solution:
discharging the battery and letting it rest
for a few hours. This process allows the
SEI matrix to dissolve, reviving inactive
lithium fragments and enhancing battery

Vision sensors with expanded field of view for robots and drones
Researchers at Beihang University in China have
developed a multi-camera differential binocular
vision sensor with an expanded field of view
(FOV). This new sensor is designed to improve
the accuracy of measurements for robots, drones,
autonomous vehicles, and other smart systems.
Traditional sensors often use single cameras,
which can limit their measurement precision due
to a restricted FOV. The innovative sensor consists
of a central primary camera surrounded by four
peripheral auxiliary cameras, creating four bin- Figure summarising the principle of the sensor (Credit: Yang et al)
ocular pairs for more precise three-dimensional
measurements. The sensor’s structure parameters have range, and accuracy, resulting in a much wider FOV than

unaware of it and unable to read iar with nets-based designs and the design or replace any compo-

ing electronic devices like SBCs or
smartphones, or any device with
many electronic components, using
wiring-based circuit schematics
becomes impractical. The mesh of
wires in such schematics (as in Fig.

jumbled and unreadable, even to the
designer.

Solution
The solution is to use nets when
designing the circuit and schemat-
ics for your product. Let’s explore
what these ‘nets’ are, why profes-
sional design engineers use them,
and how.
As you can see in Fig. 1, if

EDA tools can extract netlists
directly from schematics, capturing
the connections between compo-

Checking the connection and

DRC (design rule checking) in
nets vs wiring design
In wire-based designs, all compo-
nents are connected with wire lines
crossing over each other. When a
design has numerous components,
these overlapping lines make it im-
possible to cross-check and adhere
to design rules. However, with nets,
each net port and pin connection
can be clearly cross-checked to see
which pins and how many compo-
nents are connected.
For instance, if you have a volt-
age regulator IC powering the main
chip, sensors, indication system,
and clock signal generator in a
system, selecting the output pin on
the power system circuit shows all
other components connected to it.
If you want to replace the regulator
in a later version or make modifi-
cations, you can easily modify the
power system module, and all other
circuits adapt to that new IC of the
voltage regulator. You only need to
manage the name of the net port
for that.

enthusiast, is a tech journalist at EFY
