The Australian Islamic College of Sydney creates assessments and examinations using strict guidelines in
accordance with the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) and Assessment Certification
Examination (ACE) to maintain integrity and consistency within the College. The procedures in place ensure
fairness in the development and implementation of assessments and examinations to allow students the
opportunity for satisfactory completion of their courses.
Procedures:
Each KLA/subject must have an Assessment Schedule for every grade outlining the number of assessment
tasks, the weighting and components, the scheduling, the type of assessment task, and the assessable
outcomes of the task.
In Year 11, there are 3 formal assessment tasks across the 3 terms, with the final assessment task being the
Final Examination which is 40% of their final assessment mark in Year 11. In Year 12, there are 4 formal
assessment tasks, each weighing 25%, including the Trial Examination, which is the final assessment mark in
Year 12.
Assessments Notifications:
Students are provided an Assessment Notification of their task, at least 2 weeks prior to the task due date.
This notification outlines the nature of the task, the weighting, the relevant dates (including the due date),
the outcomes assessed, instructions and a marking criteria/ guideline. The assessment notification also
outlines the process for extenuating circumstances (in the instance of illness or misadventure).
Submission of tasks can be done either in hard copy or via an online method, determined by the classroom
teacher. The submission time is strictly 8:50am on the due date.
The students are required to sign the Acknowledgement of Receipt and Submission of Assessment
Task Form on the day they receive the task as well as on the day they submit the task to the teacher.
Assessment task submission time is 8:50am – can be online or hard copy. An extension to complete the
assessment may be granted with a dated and detailed Medical Certificate to legitimise the extenuating
circumstance. This Medical Certificate must be provided on the day of returning to school and attached to
an Illness, Misadventure and Special Circumstances (IMASC) Application.
3
Late Submission:
Without a Medical Certificate, the assessment will be penalised with a deduction of 20% each day
(including weekends), unless an IMASC Application has been approved for other circumstances.
The IMASC application is assessed by the Head of Department and Head of Secondary School
and students are notified of the outcome. All evidence including the IMASC form are upload onto
SEQTA for record keeping, along with detailed information on circumstances around the
application.
Students must fill IMASC form with evidence upon returning to school, otherwise there will be a
deduction of 20 percent per day late for task submission. If the task was a test, then the student
will have to re-sit the test.
AICS has a zero-tolerance policy to plagiarism and malpractice. Students who are found to have
plagiarised will receive a zero for their assessment mark, as well as be required to resubmit the task. If
students are found to be communicating, cheating, possessing a phone in the room or engaging in any
other inappropriate actions, they may receive a mark of zero for that examination with further
disciplinary repercussions.
The subject teachers, in consultation with the respective Heads of Department, will ensure that
assessment tasks and examinations are valid, reliable and in accordance with the NESA outcomes.
The assessments must test what students have studied in class. Teachers and Heads of Department
ensure that all assessment tasks assess the outcomes and unit content and is true to the format that has
been taught as per the program. An appropriate and relevant marking rubric must be created with each
task.
If a student submits an invalid or unreliable task, the subject teacher will establish if it is a non-serious
attempt or it is because of a lack of understanding of assignment question (due to learning difficulty).
If it is the latter, then re-submission opportunity may be provided.
To avoid invalid and unreliable task submission by the students, teaching staff will encourage students
to submit an unassessed draft for all assessment tasks. In consultation with the Head of Department,
subject teachers can provide redirection to the students to ensure that the task is reliable and valid by
meeting the summative outcomes of the assessment. The subject teacher and Head of Department can
provide additional support and opportunity for task re-submission.
Note:
Subject Assessment Schedules and Scope and Sequences may change. The students, parents and
guardians will be notified if this happens.
