3. This is an essay question;
Students should explain the relationship between language and literature
(a)Introduction
- meanings of literature and language (1.5 marks)
Literature can be defined as work of art that uses language artistically to send
message to the audience.
Language is a system of arbitrary local symbols which are used in communication.
(b) Main body (@1.5 marks) any five points
-the relationship btn language and literature
 Language is a system which people use direct to express thoughts, feelings and
views.
 Literature expresses people’s thoughts feelings and views
 Language is the basic raw material through which literature is produced i.e
literally artist use language in producing poem, novels and play.

 Manipulation of any literally works depends on the language used in portraying
themes, messages as well as literary devices.
 Language beautify literally works through the use of various figures of speech
such as alliteration ,assonance, metaphors, etc
 Literary artist must be competent in using language eg. Violation grammar, the
use of symbols and imageries are used purposely to bring about specially
effects in a literary works.
 Language may simplify or complicate any literary work i.e the understanding of
literary work whether its novel, play or poetry depend on the language used.
 Literature is one of the ways through which language is function, in express
function language report feelings, attitude of the wrighter or of the subject
 While language is a means of communication literature is the content to be
communicated.

4. (a) i)The poem is about eating the balance diet as the slogan insist though persona and

other addressee cannot afford the expenses of eating balance diet (2 marks)

b. the persons in this poem is any man who is poor, unemployed. (1 mark)

c)possible themes are; (2 marks)

Hypocrite –the existing government is hypocrite as it insisting the

importance of eating balance diet without considering real life

situation of the people, ie see in fist stanza and in the first and second

verses

Protest-in second stanza the persona protest the slogan as he says

‘the only one that would suit me,

Eat more blood grass!’

Exploitation-people who lack employment like persona, are the one

who are exploited because they have no access to resources.

Consciousness-persona has got some awareness by rejecting the

slogan and propose his own. See in stanza 2

Classes-in the society of the persona there are people who are

prospering and those who are suffering like persona as they cannot

afford food staffs proposed by the government

(d)The message of the poem is whatever like (2 marks)

We should discourage exploitation

Government should provide employment to all educated etc

We should uplift human rights

e. i. the poem is relevant to our society for example the issue of

unemployment, poverty, exploitation, hypocrisy from the poem is

relevant to our society because most number of people, they are

suffering from unemployment, poverty etc(1 mark)

iii. figures of speech i. personification eg ..’…the slogsn say..’

ii.repetition. Eg eat more is repeated.

iii. Symbolism eg bloody grass symbolize poor people

/lower classand food like fruit, bread etc symbolize rich people /upper

7. Introduction
Definition oral and written literature (1.5 marks)
Main body
The student should differentiate oral and written literature (five points
@ 1.5 marks) such as;
Oral literature is represented through spoken medium while written literature is represented
through written form.
Oral literature is older than written literature because it started since man born while written
literature came after the advancement of science
And technology (writing)

Written literature is costfull as it requires a preparation. Example, writing ,writing materials,
printing etc while oral literature have no cost oral
Literature is cheap because to tell a story does not need money.

Oral literature does not require storage devices because it is what people have in his/her mind
but written literature uses storage means books,
magazine, storage devices like CD, DVD, computer, flash etc.

Oral literature is not selective means educated and non educated are the participants in oral
literature while written literature needs those who
Know to read and write sonly.

Oral literature require a specific setting, this means a specific place and time where the
narrator meet with the targeted audiences but written
Literature does not need a specific setting because the reader can read any time and any place
because it is accessible in terms of pieces of
writing.

messages conveyed

- Awareness is very important in the liberation of the oppressed,as the poet


says

So thePs had Ulcers too

My ulcers I thiSnk are equally painful

Only they are caused by hunger

- Hypocrisy,classes and exploitation should be discouraged, as the poet says


The menu reflected its importance
Cold bell beer with small talk

- If the high class is not careful with nation building one day the oppressed may
revolt; as the poet says
So two nation builders
Arrived home this evening
With terrible stomach pains
The result of building the nation

But my eyes,on my eyes
They don’t see anything black
Its only white skins and masks
Generally poems convey messages to the society in order to bring awareness
that people can improve their standard of living. ( 01 mark)
