California is full of diverse and interesting species. In this
infographic, we'll take a closer look the coyote, a truly
remarkable canine that thrives in The Golden State.

Coyote Habitat
Coyotes are extremely adaptable, leading to them inhabiting a
wide range of habitats including forests, grasslands, deserts,
swamps, and even the city.

Coyote Diet
Coyotes are omnivores, however they
tend to eat meat more commonly. Their
diet primarily consists of deer, small
mammals, and birds.

Coyote Physical Description


The coyote is a medium-sized canine standing around 20 to 22 inches at
the shoulder, with a grayish-brown fur coat, pointed ears, and a bushy,
black-tipped tail.

Coyotes can run at a top speed of 40 miles per hour, a whole 10 mph faster than
Usain Bolt, the fastest known human.

Coyote sightings are most common during sunrise and sunset.

Coyotes are capable of crossbreeding with wolves and dogs, resulting


in ‘coywolves’ and ‘coydogs’.

Coyotes walk silently when they sense danger.

Coyotes and badgers may hunt together in a symbiotic relationship.
