Creativity
A recent personal experience at work from a project that was implemented last year -
The Team focused on creativity and innovation, to develop a new tool and something
that is very useful for the factory production. This was a web based tool, able to share
all info regarding the factory production, including some dynamic view of the shop floor.
Information was related to production floor, the status of units inside and all details
regarded each order in production, so everyone knows the progress of the production
for each order. All people concerned have access to this info: Engineering Department,
Project Engineer and Shop floor Mgr. + Logistics Department. Implementing this has
reduced wasting time.
Value to the individual and group
-People have changed their habits, they have stopped using Excel and have started
with the new SharePoint
- In the past, Info from many excel files and other info were not shared
- Project Engineer had to visit the workshop to guess at what stage each machine was,
now just looking at the web tool they know the progress of the assembly
- Good for the Shop floor Mgr. as he can better organize production
- For the Logistics people, they can follow the assembly of the chiller and then better
organize the delivery
- Materials planning can easily manage if there are components missing, so it saves
time
Group effort
All the participant’s went beyond their normal job role and responsibilities. The
competitions involved heavy research creativity and ingenuity for their presentations.
There have been instances where a new innovation, proto-type web tool was not just
conceptualized but created in a short span of 4-6 weeks which include normal job
duties.
The event managing team went above their job responsibility, they owned this project in
totality giving their weekends. The event was planned by creating a master task list,
project tracker with regular status update calls, event witnessed unforeseen situations
Highly uncreative activity experience from my current work is generating test lab status
report for the management team. This activity is not innovative or creative as it is
mandated to email every morning even when the test labs are shut down for
maintenance or during company holidays. I am not motivated to download the reports
and sometimes email the same material as there is no update and it does not save my
time. This time can effectively be utilized for some other creative task that would help
me for my career advancement.
These two examples provide the individual creative styles. It is very much important to
consider individual characteristics when introducing a new innovation, because
individual characteristics or individual factors are one of the most important factors
determining the adoption of a new innovation. The individual norms, values and beliefs
have a stronger influence on individual's adoption of innovation. If an individual thinks
that the innovation is more compatible to its individual characteristics and will increase
his efficiency and effectiveness, the innovation is more likely to be adopted.
