A linking verb is used to link, or join, a subject and a noun
in a sentence.

A modal auxiliary verb is a type of helping verb. It gives
additional information about the main verb in a sentence. It tells
how likely or necessary something is. A modal auxiliary verb always
comes before the main verb.
