why it happens.

Recall about compound words:


Mark slung his backpack over his shoulder and ran. The bus
company had just introduced a new bus route. Over the cliffs in the
distance, Mark could see the sea sparkling. With a smile, he paid for his
ticket and sat down. On the drivers lap there was a newspaper with a bold
headline reading ‘Burglar Caught’. At the back of the bus, a commotion
started up with two teenage boys arguing. Over the bridge, the bus traveled
on until it pulled up at Mark’s stop. Below the deep water in the canal, fish
swam in the murky depths. Turning down a side alley, Mark reached his
front door and took out his key. From the back lawn the dog was barking a
welcome, and Mark was very glad to be home at last.

Strategy that develop creative or higher-order thinking skill:

Motivation:

Game- The pupils are pre-group into three. As the teacher show different
science terms like veterinary doctor, science idea, laboratory equipment,
chemistry subject, abdominal muscle and so on, a member from the group
will put the words into correct basket labeled single word , hyphenated and
separate word compound words. The pupil who correctly put the word into
the right basket will get a score.

Notice the italized shorten words. Let the pupils guess its original word.

-Many of the teens nowadays like to watch sci-fi TV series.

Types of Clipping

1. Backclipping- is the loss of one or more syllables at the end of a word.


Examples: bra-brassiere

Show some other examples of Type of Clipping

memorandum-memo( back clipping) A short written report specially for a


person or group of people which contains information about a particular
matter.

dormitory- dorm( back clipping) A large room containing many beds


especially in a boarding school or university

refrigerator- fridge- Middle clipping A piece of kitchen equipment which


uses electricity to preserve food at cold temperature

taxicab -taxi -foreclipping A kind of land transportation with 4 wheels

2. Foreclipping refers to the omission of one or more syllables at the


beginning of a word. Examples: -phone-telephone -sample-example

3. Middle clipping (Syncope) retains the middle part of aword, getting the
rid of the beginning and ending parts.

4.Complex clipping is the shortening of a compound word by preserving


and combining its initial part (or parts syllables) Examples:
