The area of an indicator diagram taken for one cylinder of a six cylinder, two stroke
diesel engine is 450 mm2. The length is 72 mm and the indicator spring scale is
1 mm = 150 kN/m2. The diameter of the cylinders is 900 mm, stroke is 1800 mm and
the engine speed is 105 rpm. Calculate the indicated power of the engine, assuming all
cylinders develop equal power.

2. A circuit is made up from four resistors of values 2 ohms, 4 ohms, 5 ohms and 10
ohms connected in parallel. If the current is 8.6 amperes, find the voltage dropped across
the arrangement and the current in each resistor. (10marks)

3. A ship’s main propulsion engine burns 40 tonne of fuel per day, when her
displacement is 16,000 tonne and speed is 14.5 knots. The auxiliary engine burns 2
tonne of fuel per day, when at sea or in port. Calculate the total consumption of fuel for
a voyage of 2030 nautical miles, at a speed of 17 knots, when the displacement is
13,000 tonne.

4. A vessel of 10,000 tonne displacement consumes fuel at a rate of 75 tonne per day at
18 knots, of which 7 tonne are consumed by auxiliary engines. Calculate bunkers
required for a passage of 3000 nautical miles at 12 knots, allowing for a 4 days reserve
at a speed of 19 knots.

5. Calculate the resistance of a shunt required to operate with a milli-ammeter, which gives
full scale deflection for a current of 15 milli-amperes and which has a resistance of 5
ohms. The combination of meter and shunt is required to read current up to 100 amperes.
(10 marks)
6. A vessel left port with 300 tonne of fuel in the bunkers, covered a journey of 2448
nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots and arrived at her destination with 45 tonne of fuel
in hand. What speed would have enabled the ship to arrive at her destination with the
same reserve of fuel if she started off from port with 233 tonne in the bunkers? What
would be the daily consumption of fuel at the new speed? (10 marks)

7. The pitch of a ship’s propeller is 5.2 m. It is required to travel a distance of 5 nautical

miles approximately by the engine revolution counter, at an engine speed of 80 rpm. If
the propeller slip is assumed to be 4%, calculate the number of revolutions required to
travel this distance, and the time taken.

8. Two groups of resistors A and B are connected in series. Group A consists of four
resistors of values 2 ohms, 4 ohms, 6 ohms and 8 ohms connected in parallel and Group
B consists of two resistors of values 10 ohms and 15 ohms connected in parallel. If the
current in the 4 ohms resistor is 1.5 amperes, calculate (a) the current in each of the
remaining resistors, (b) the supply voltage, and (c) the voltage dropped across the groups
A and B.
