Competency: Tell the benefits of separating mixtures from products in community
Key Concepts/
Understandings to  Separating funnel can be used to separate two liquids when one liquid does not mix with another but
be developed floats on top of it. Oil floats on water, thus, this mixture can be separated using a separating funnel
 A magnet can be used to separate iron filings from a mixture of domestic waste. It is used in recycling
to recover iron and steel from non-metals and other waste.
1. Objectives:
Knowledge Describe the benefits of separating mixture through using magnets and funnel.

Skills Enumerate the benefits of separating mixtures using magnets and funnel.

Attitudes Propose ways of caring the environment through recycling.

Values Integrate care of the environment through reduce, reuse, recycle.
2. Content/Topic: Benefits of Separating Mixtures from Products in Community
3. Learning ICT Integration, sample pictures of mixture, charts, magnets, funnel with tap, sand, small iron nails /small bolts,
Resources/ water, olive oil, internet, multimedia, manila paper.( or any available materials in the locality that could serve
Materials/ the purpose)
Equipment Needed

4. Procedures
4.1 Preparations Introductory Activity Review:
(5 minutes)  What are the different ways of separating mixtures that you learn already?
 What benefits that derived from it?
Motivation:
 Show some pictures of different mixtures
 What other mixtures that comes to your mind?
 Did you know other ways of separating it?

4.2 Presentation Activity  Show a short video clips

(13 minutes) (Group Activity)
Mechanics
1. Divide the class into two groups
2. Let the group pick one picture that serve them as a guide and materials
needed.
3. One group will perform the activity for magnets and the other group for the
funnel.
4. They will take turns in doing the activity.
5. Let them take note their observation using the chart provided.
6. Select a reporter and have the group output reported.
 What did you feel while doing the activity?

Analysis  What technique you used to separate nails from the sand?
(8 minutes)
 What technique you used to separate water from olive oil?

 How magnets and funnel differ from its uses in separating mixtures?

 What are the benefits of separating mixtures using magnets or funnel your
group formulated?
 Describe each benefit mention?

Abstraction  The teacher will give inputs on the following:

(5 minutes)  The used of magnets and funnel
 What are the benefits out from the used of magnets and funnel in
separating mixtures?
 What are the benefits out from the used of magnets and funnel?

4.3 Practice Application Group activity

(8 minutes) Materials : Worksheet
Mechanics:
1. Let the pupils join their learning team
2. Provide them worksheet
3. Choose one group member to report

Mr. Iron Cheng was a Scrap buyer. Separating pieces of iron
and steel from a mixture of solids and other forms of domestic
waste was his problem in his shop.

Question to answer:
1. How can Mr. Cheng effectively separate iron and steel from
mixtures of solids?
2. What separating method used?
3. How beneficial it is?
4. Suggest another method ( Optional)
