Quiz on Gear Student Name: Chan Long Ting Student ID: 56201394

An 18-tooth pinion rotates at 1500 rpm and transmits 60 kW of power to the gear train
as shown in the Fig. A1 below. The gear train has two outputs and the power of the
output 1 is 35% of the input power. All dimension units are in mm.

(a) Assume there is also zero power loss in every gear contact. The pressure angle for
all gears is 25˚. Calculate the angular speed and contact forces acting on each gear.
Please present your answers in the format of a table as shown below. (23 points)
Gear 2 3 4 5 6 7
(input) (output (output
1) 2)
Diameter 108 516 400 500 680 280

Wr (kN) 3.30 3.30 4.25 4.26 2.50 2.50

(b) If there is 3% power loss in each gear contact and the rest of the conditions remain
the same, comment what changes will occur to the values in the table in part (a). (4
points)
The angular speeds and diameters of all gears are not under effect of power loss, as
𝑁1 𝑤2 𝑅1
they can be obtained by gear ratios, = = .
𝑁2 𝑤1 𝑅1

𝑃
Wt of all gears will decrease, because torque of gear is given by Wt x r = . Gear 2,
𝜔

3, 4, 6 will have the smallest power loss of 3%, gear 5 and 7 have the most power
loss of 6%. Take account of radius and angular speed, gear 4 will have the largest
tangential work, gear 7 will have the smallest tangential work.
Wr of all gear will decrease in proportion with Wt, because Wr is obtained by Wt x
tan(25), where tan(25) is a constant.
