Aromatic Compounds
❖ Use to describe fragrant substances as
a. benzene (coal distillates)
Uses- plastics, nylons, rubber, detergents, drugs and
pesticides.
b. benzaldehyde (cherries, peaches, and almonds)
Uses- flavorings, perfumes
c. toluene (tolu balsam)
Uses: solvent in paints, thinners, glues, correctional fluid
and etc.
❖ Class of compounds that contain six-membered benzene-like
rings with three alternating double bond
Benzene’s effect to human health
Benzene can cause leukemia when to much exposure
✓ drugs- dimenhydrinate (nausea, vomiting, vertigo)
✓ paints
✓ detergent and etc.
Benzene structure
• Benzene (C6H6)
Naming Aromatic Compound
• Aromatic substances, more than any other class of
organic compounds, have acquired a large number of
common names. IUPAC rules discourage the use of most
such names but allow some of the more widely used ones
to be retained (Table 5.1).

Tips on Naming Aromatic Compounds
• Remember and familiarize the aromatic compounds with
common names, and the functional groups.
• Identify the substitution/substituents ( mono, di or many)
• Number the carbons (for di and many substituents)
• Name in alphabetical order
