The founder of Classic Pare® Titos and Titas of Manila have been up

social media it was inevitable that people would seek escape from it. Nostalgia became a way to this month

But we’re not going to be overly dramatic. We turn 18 this month and while we’ve done
a lot of remembering for this special issue, we also keep ourselves firmly grounded in the
present, as we’ve always done, and poking into the future, because that’s what it takes to stay
relevant.

new concept in the Philippines.
We grew up waiting for the
neighborhood taho vendor every
morning and buy fishballs and
kwek-kwek from peddlers pushing
their makeshift kitchens down busy
streets. We rave about the sisig from
the aluminum Jollijeeps in Makati,
and get excited when we see peanut
sellers in the middle of a major
highway because that means we’ll
be stuck in traffic for a long time.
But colorful food trucks hawking
burgers, shawarma, hotdogs, and
even ice cream? Now that’s something
we don’t see often, but would certainly

I ‘80s and well into the ‘90s, if any
problem needed some solving, you
do only one thing: Go to the beach.
Rich kids trying to settle a bet
on who’s the better guy? “Hey, you
think you may be good at polo but
I bet I could beat you at any water
sport!” In an instant, a girl comes
up with a solution. “Hey, why don’t we all go to the beach?”
This happened in P.S. I Love You (1981), starring then
young love team Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion.
Just got kicked out from your last school and anxious
about going to the next? “May bahay kami sa Baguio, gusto
niyo dun tayo.” Okay, they didn’t immediately go to the
beach, but they did on the way down, meeting nice girls
while they were there. This happened in Bagets (1984),
which is a classic.
Heck, you almost burned down your school in a
Foundation Day peformance of pandanggo sa ilaw gone
horribly wrong and the principal is furious? “Tutal galing
tayo sa initan, bakit hindi ho tayo magpalamig? Bakit
hindi ho tayo pumunta sa beach? Mag-excursion tayo!”
This happened in Ma’am May We Go Out? (1985) starring
Tito,Vic and Joey, who weren’t teenagers but played high
school students anyway.

This one had Rachel Alejandro in it: Pwera Biro, Mahal
Kita—D’ Beach Boys (1996), starring Ogie Alcasid, Michael
V. and one time Miss Australia and Ogie’s future wife/ex-
wife Michelle Van Eimeren. By the title alone, you know
the beach formula solved the problem in the movie. Rachel
has a general recollection of it.
“My love team partner was Rannie Raymundo. We shot
most of the movie in Subic if I remember correctly. And
there was no script or anything. The staff just wrote the
dialogue and funny gags as we went along. All I had to do
was wear sexy summer wear and look hot—that was pretty
much my role. The “happy moments” jet skiing scene was
lots of fun.”
Now, a lot of you who were already around in the ‘90s
might have forgotten or were completely unaware of
Rachel’s innate hotnesss. Maybe you think she got into it
when she began her The Sexy Chef business 14 years ago.
But no, she already had it; she was, shall we say, “gifted”
in places. That beach movie, obscure as it is now despite
it being on YT (it won’t even appear if you Google “Rachel
Alejandro films”), showed Rachel’s clear potential that just
wasn’t unleashed. Even in the movie itself you have to wait,
or scroll, a full 1:25:12 to see her in a two-piece swimsuit,
which she rocked.
Looking back at it now, maybe there might have been
a small cult following of Rachel Alejandro As Sexy Young
Vixen. Maybe you were one of them, dear tito. If so, this is
where we will prove you right.

A Alejandro is revealing, maybe for the

first time, that she could have been
one of the biggest ST stars of the ‘90s.
“I got offered to star in a sexy
movie in the ‘90s—I’m not going to
mention the title because I think it
became a big hit and it made another
actress, the one who took the role, a
big star. It made her a very, very big star. I remember the
movies were called ST. Oh my goodness, for the millennials
out there, ST is Sex Trip, okay,” Rachel says.

Yes, that was what ST was. It made sexpots out of

Gretchen Barretto, Rina Reyes, and Rita Avila—names only
the suki of Classic Pare® Titos and Titas of Manila have
fond memories of. Rachel could have created quite a stir, if
not a scandal, had she taken the risk because she was still a
teen pop star in many people’s minds and, hence, still a kid.
“[The movie] was really just an excuse to take my
clothes off. And it’s not what I was about. Not that I see
anything wrong with it, it’s just that… I mean if there’s
anything sexy in a film, I would like for there naman to be
a story or a point, kasi there are things that you wanna do
for money and there are things that you do because you
believe in it. As that point in my life I was already looking
for something that interested me,” Rachel recalls.
Not that she was a prude. Rachel remembers being one
of the first young song-and-dance solo act to wear, in her
words, risque costumes that today may look commonplace
but in the ‘90s was pure rebellion.
“No one was really wearing the costumes I wore [back
in the day]. Now, you watch ASAP and you’d see the
girls wearing, like, thigh-high patent leather boots and
all that—I was doing that in the ‘90s! I did those things
because that was what I liked, it was what I thought looked
astig at the time. It wasn’t an image, it wasn’t something
that I put on—it was what I felt [at the time], what made me
feel good singing and dancing.”

like this, what would you do?
Talk about sending mixed signals.
“I know right! [laughs] I don’t
know if this is good or bad, but I
think that I’ve made out myself to be
different every time, and people see that. This whole FHM
cover experience has been surreal, especially coming from
Ang Larawan—not only is this my very first FHM cover,
Ang Larawan is also my first lead, as in lead role. How I
can switch from this to that, it’s a complete 180 degree turn
for me. I mean, how dowdier can you get as a spinster in
Ang Larawan—the costumes were really pangit and our
director had forbade us to put on concealers so we would
look like we had no makeup. And then…FHM! Ha ha!
Glamorous!
Glam may be a little too reserved. The word, really,
is “sexy.”
While this cover only proves what many have long seen,
the fact is that Rachel, with her sister Barni Alejandro-
Rennebeck, has been a pioneer in the wellness movement
when they established The Sexy Chef in 2004.

From all these we can see that Rachel had been cut
out to be different from the outset, and the amazing
thing is that, with the exception of her beginnings as a
teen star and, well, a few forays into the cliché (the beach
formula), she has been doing this for well over two decades
now. Longevity mostly works by going with the flow;
Rachel only ever swims against it. This is about the only
explanation we can think of for a mainstream celebrity to
devote years of her career to, say, theater.
“I always have something going on, whether it’s a
musical that I’m coming out in, like this coming April
next month, I’m going to be in Monty Python’s Spamalot,
a musical comedy which is a wacky take on the legend of
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We had
sold out performances middle of last year and we have
repeat shows this April at the BGC Arts Center, Taguig.”
It’s fair to say, though, that this FHM debut is by far
Rachel’s most unexpected performance yet.
“It almost seems like I’m a late bloomer, but I’m so not!
You have to remember, guys, I started out at the age of 12,
and despite having reached my age there are still a lot of
things happening to me for the very first time.” FH M

page, bookmarks the phenomenal rise of his
community to a particular time last year when
people were doing nothing for a week.
And thus the first lesson we learn on how
to launch successful online communities, or
campaigns for that matter, is timing. Catch
people at the moment when they are willing
and have the time to engage.
With two million followers and growing
in less than a year, Classic Pare® offers
valuable tips in spades, stuff that other bigger
companies pay good money for. And we did
you the favor of learning them by engaging
the man behind the page in stimulating
conversation. Other tips he offers: be an expert
on a subject, put together a team of like-
minded souls, share experiences.
But in the end, the biggest lesson might
be: give people what they want. In this age of
negative vibes in social media, maybe what we
all need is a way out. And right now, nostalgia
is the perfect escape.
What got you into creating Classic Pare®
Titos and Titas of Manila?
It started as a food community. I actually
co-founded nine Pare® communities, which
originated with Let’s Eat Pare®. I didn’t create
the “pare” community with guys in mind,
the word is just my brand somewhat. It’s
something I use very casually; whenever I
talk to people I always put “pare” in the end,
even when I post on social media. I thought
“pare” was a very warm and welcoming word
to use, and also connotes being Filipino. After
the success of Let’s Eat Pare® people started
to ask me about the next concept, so of the
nine other “pare” communities Classic Pare®
was one that I came up with myself. I had an
immediate feeling it would click.
As we speak Classic Pare® is 1.9 million
members and still growing barely a year
from conception. Do you remember the exact
moment when the page really went viral?
What was the exact post?
It was not actually a moment, I would say it
was a period. You remember the weeklong

holiday because of ASEAN Summit [that
happened in November 2017]? Classic Pare®
only went online in October of last year, and it
was during ASEAN that we grew by leaps and
bounds.

Yes, and there was a lot of downtime. And
then when work started the following week,
my friends were telling me, ‘uy pare hindi ako 1
nakatrabaho because I was so hooked on your
page.
There are many nostalgia communities
on Facebook, but what do you think made
Classic Pare® stand out?
I think it’s the selection of members that
we find. They have a lot of stories to share.
Although we were filtering membership on
the outset, we immediately began to let people
invite their friends into the community just to
see how it would work.
One thing we noticed about Classic Pare®
is that apart from the pop culture tidbits
on stuff, there are also a lot of childhood
memories shared—life in the provinces,
growing up with lola, picking fruits from
the neighbor’s tree, tatay from Saudi buying
that carpet depicting dogs playing billiards.
Do you think it’s these things that struck a
chord with the community?
Yes, it does. I think anything that’s relatable 2
to the mass majority will be popular. It also
really depends on your demographic. If I’m a
music lover and I post about music it’s going
to hit all the music lovers of that community.
In the same way, telling a story about your
childhood will attract members who went
through the same thing. I think the magic
behind Classic Pare® is that a lot of people
found refuge in it. Social media right now
has a lot of negativity, and our page reminds
people of a time when they were truly happy
and life was very simple, when you didn’t have
to think about your paycheck, or paying rent,
those things.
Because you already run many communities,
and you have people work with you, does
this mean that your pages are already an 3
enterprise? Do you now make money off of it?
No. Our goal really is to bring positivity back
to social media. There have been offers to
advertise, but we’re very careful about those
things.

or do it yourself, there is huge potential
for branding on streaming platforms
and social media,” Taylor says. “Build a
brand and make your brand stand out
with graphics that look professional and
attractive.”
Be flexible
Arrends reminds us that things can
change drastically, so always keep an
open mind. “Now that you’re making
content on the Internet, there will be a lot
of opinion that do not agree with you, and
that's okay. Some opinion might actually
make sense, some won’t. But have an
open mind to take in feedback that might
help take your content to the next level.”
Have fun
Taylor’s best advice is to enjoy what
you’re doing. “If you are not enjoying
streaming then viewers won’t enjoy
watching, so make sure you’re doing what
