Lab 4: weak iodine solution

Aim: prepare and submit 25 ml of weak iodine solution.

Requirements: iodine, potassium iodide, ethanol 90%, beaker, stirrer, and

cylinder.

Iodine 20g
Potassium iodide 25g
Ethanol 90% 10ml
Purified water up to 1000ml

Procedure:

1. Working formula is calculated

2. Potassium iodide and iodine are dissolved in ethanol
3. Sufficient water is added to the above to prepare the required quantity of
volume.
4. The preparation is transferred to an amber-colored glass bottle
5. The bottle is capped, labeled, and submit

Note: iodine reacts with some ingredients present in an ordinary glass container,
an iodine-resistant container like an amber-colored bottle is used.

The solution stains the skin and hair. These stains may be removed with a dilute
alkali solution or sodium thiosulphate solution.
