INSTRUCCIONES:

Part A. Identification of parts of speech


After reading the abstract of the article, identify (put in bold) the next information:

1. Noun. Find and circle three nouns in the next sentence:


“In a qualitative study, 34 patients receiving joint replacement were interviewed before
surgery, 2–4 weeks, 6 and 12 months after surgery.”

2. Pronoun. Find and circle two pronouns that replace a plural noun:
“We used an inductive approach to the work and the areas of literature that we draw on are
those that became most relevant as data collection and analysis progressed.”

3. Adjective. Find and circle: 1) an adjective that means “in shape, healthy”, 2) Find a
compound adjective and 3) find an adjective that describes the importance of
something.
“The research aimed to provide robust patient-centred evidence that could inform future
design and delivery of health care for people undergoing joint replacement. We used an
inductive approach to the work and the areas of literature that we draw on are those that
became most relevant as data collection and analysis progressed.

4. Verb. Find and circle one verb that indicates action and another verb that indicates a
state.
“Patients noted that delays to joint replacement in the NHS are common, which has
implications for well-being.

5. Adverb. Find and circle an adverb that means “great in amount” in the next sentence:
“Patients rely extensively on, and value, both informal and formal support networks over the
perioperative period.”

6. Preposition. How many prepositions can you find in the next sentence? Circle them.

“Our qualitative research addresses this gap in evidence by focusing on experiences of pre-
operative circumstances and preparation, views about the hospital stay and the operation, as
well as exploring longer-term recovery, rehabilitation and outcome in the year after surgery.”

7. Conjunction. Check again the article and find a sentence that includes a conjunction.

providing an in-depth understanding of the ways in which their confidence was affected by,
and affected, their journey through hip replacement surgery.”

Part B. Reading Comprehension skills


Read the section with the title: “Understanding the patient experience: total hip
replacement.” Then, answer the next three questions.

1. What possible consequences do patients have when they are waiting for a hip
replacement?
“Patients awaiting hip surgery have previously reported experiencing significant increases in
pain and physical disability, high levels of psychological distress, and an overall deterioration.”

2. What are the two possible relevant experiences of patients undergoing joint
replacement?
a. Confidence and vulnerability.
b. Phisically or emotionally wounded.

3. What type of illness brings about pain and functional limitations?


“Living with osteoarthritis and undergoing surgery brings about pain and functional
limitations.”
