ENGG*6290 ST: Two Phase Flow (Summer 2024)

Assignment No. 1
Due date: Friday June 7th 2024

1- Drive the following equation from the definitions discussed:

ug x r f æ1- a ö
s= = × ç ÷ and
uf 1- x rg è a ø
r f × xs
a=
r g + ( r f - r g ) × xs
Where xs is the static quality.

2- Prove that the energy equation can be written as follow:

ì dE Qwf ü ìï d G 2 d æç x v g (1 - x) v f öüï
3 2 3 2

Where E is the flow-weighted mixture internal energy per unit mass and express in terms:

E = xe g + (1 - x)e f

and W is the total mass flow rate.

Explain how the total pressure gradient can be obtained using the two-phase flow
parameters discussed.

3- Consider the inlet flow conditions of a header pipe to a steam boiler are:

P=55 bars and T= 265 oC

A rupture occurs in one of the feeder tube (along the header); estimate the quality of the
two-phase flow jet at the break plan. Discuss the different two-phase flow parameters
required to analyze the present failure.
