Stage 1: Interview

Ask the candidates some of the questions which appear in PART 1. Provide the students
with thinking time and / or repeat questions if appropriate.

Stage 2: Picture description

Candidates are given a photograph that depicts a situation.

Very successful candidates make coherent sentences with some hesitation and try to
use some linkers and discourse markers. They can describe what they can see with
simple grammatical forms e.g. present simple or past simple and they attempt some
complex structures (e.g. relative clauses, conditionals, etc.) They can also use a range of
vocabulary. Average candidates achieve the task successfully despite hesitation. They
use simple grammatical forms appropriately although not always accurately. They use
appropriate vocabulary. Weaker candidates struggle with simple grammatical forms
and do not attempt complex structures. They use a very limited range of vocabulary.
They carry out the task with a lot of hesitation and are not able to produce much.
