Body Electrical System > Horn > Horn > Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The vehicle is equipped with one horn mounted behind the front bumper on the right side. Operation of the horn is
controlled by a switch (horn button) located on the steering wheel. Electrical power from the positive side of the battery is
applied to a horn relay located under the lower panel of the steering column. When the horn button is pressed, the horn
relay is energized, and electrical power is directed to the horn. The circuit is completed by the case-ground of the horn,
and the horn sounds. When force is removed from the horn button, springs force the button upward to open the horn
switch. The relay is de-energized and horn operation stops.

Body Electrical System > ETACS (Electronic Time > ETACS Module > Description and
Operation
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Theft Deterrent System is comprised of an Electronic Time and Alarm Control Module (ETACM), Hood Switch, Front
Door Key Lock Cylinder Contact Switches, and a Rear Hatch Lock Cylinder Micro Switch. This system operates in
conjunction with the power door lock system and is installed in all 1997 Sportage Module. When the system is activated, it

http://www.kiatechinfo.com/viewer/toc_print.asp?vehicletype=Passenger&mfrcode=... 10/12/2011
Page 11 of 115

monitors allpassenger doors, the hood, and the rear hatch for unauthorized entry.
The Theft Deterrent System can be activated whenever all of the doors are CLOSED (door jamb switches are in the OPEN
position), the rear hatch is CLOSED (micro switch is OPEN) and either the driver’s or passenger’s lock cylinder contact
switch is turned to the LOCK position using the ignition key. The horn will make one quick sound, indicating the Theft
Deterrent System is activated. Locking the doors with the door lock knobs will not activate the Theft Deterrent System.
Once the Theft Deterrent System is activated, the horn will sound ON and OFF, and the combination lights will flash ON
and OFF if any of the doors, the hood, or the rear hatch are OPENED (any door jamb switch CLOSES, the hood switch
CLOSES,or the rear hatch micro switch CLOSES) without first using the ignition key in either of the front doors or rear
hatch.
The system is deactivated by inserting the ignition key into either front door lock cylinder or into the rear hatch lockcylinder
and turning it to the ONLOCK position. It is important to note that opening the rear hatch (ignition key must be used to
open the rear hatch) after activating the Theft Deterrent System, will cause the system to deactivate and thedoors will be
UNLOCKED.

Electronic Time and Alarm Control Module

The Electronic Time and Alarm Control Module (ETACM) receives input signals from various vehicle components and
controlsthe Theft Deterrent System, as well as the power door lock function. Inputs to the ETACM include: door jamb
switches, hood switch, rear hatch micro switch, front door lock cylinder contact switches, and key in ignition switch.
The Electronic Time and Alarm Control Module (ETACM) is located in the instrument panel, just above and to the left of
the glove box opening. The ETACM is accessible after the glove box and lower trim panel are removed.

Front Door Lock Cylinder Contact Switch

The Front Door Lock Cylinder Contact Switches are a rotary design and sense that the lock cylinder has been rotated to
either the door OPEN or door LOCK position, whenever the ignition key is used in the lock cylinder.
The Front Door Lock Cylinder Contact Switches are mounted on both front door lock cylinders, and should be installed
using extreme caution for correct operation.

Body Electrical System > Indicators And Gauges > Fuel Gauge > Description and
Operation
DESCRIPTION
The electrical fuel gauge system consists of an electrical panel gauge and a fuel tank sender device. The fuel gauge
indicates quantity of fuel in the fuel tank only when the ignition is turned to the “ON” position. When the ignition switch is
turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” positions, the pointer does not point to the correct fuel level.

Body Electrical System > Indicators And Gauges > Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge >
Description and Operation
Meters And Gauges (Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge)
The engine coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster indicates the temperature of the engine coolant with the
ignition switch in the “ON” position. A sending unit in the engine changes resistance with temperature. The engine
temperature warning light is controlled by a temperature switch by way of the ECM which senses engine coolant
temperatures. When the ignition is in the “ON” position, a test circuit is closed by the ECM and the light comes on to
indicate the lamp is working properly. The coolant temperature indicator comes on at coolant temperatures above 259°F
(125°C) and off when the coolant temperature drops below 230°F (110°C).

Body Electrical System > Indicators And Gauges > Tachometer > Description and
Operation
DESCRIPTION
The tachometer indicates engine speed in rpm (revolutions per minute) with the engine running. A wire to the “TACH”
connector on the ignition module measures the ignition pulses of the module. An electronic circuit on the tachometer
converts these pulses to rpm data.

When removing or installing any electrical units, disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent possible short
circuits which could lead to personal injury and/or property damage.

When replacing the odometer assembly, the law requires the odometer reading of the replacement unit to be set to the
same mileage as the prior odometer. If the mileage cannot be set, the law requires that the replacement odometer be set
at zero and a label be installed on the driver’s door frame to show previous odometer reading and the date of replacement.

Body Electrical System > Indicators And Gauges > Speedometer > Description and
Operation
DESCRIPTION
Speedometer/Odometer/Trip Meter
This instrument cluster assembly includes a speedometer, an odometer and a trip meter. The speedometer indicates
speed. The odometer records total road mileage. The trip meter records trip mileage. The indicator needle is electrically
driven by a precision DC motor circuit. The speed information source is a speed sensor on the transmission. The odometer
and trip meters consists of numbered wheels that are electrically driven by a DC stepper motor.

Body Electrical System > Power Door Locks > Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The power door lock system is comprised of the door lock assembly, power lock motor, inside door handle, outside door
handle, door lock cylinder, and door lock switch. This system is installed on all doors of the vehicle. The system is
activated by the driver’s side door which has a manual door lock system and a door lock switch. The switch is connected
to the time control unit.

http://www.kiatechinfo.com/viewer/toc_print.asp?vehicletype=Passenger&mfrcode=... 10/12/2011
Page 37 of 115

The door lock assembly has four remote control rods. One is attached to the power lock motor (power lock motor rod.)
Thesecond is attached to the inside door handle (inside door handle rod). The third is attached to the outside door handle
(outside door handle rod). The fourth rod is attached to the lock cylinder of the outside door handle (lock cylinder rod).
Depressing and pulling up the door lock knob on the driver’s side door locks and unlocks the remaining three doors of the
vehicle. Depressing the driver’s side knob and closing the door while holding the outside handle locks all four
doors.Opening this door with a key automatically unlocks all four doors. Depressing the driver’s side knob and closing the
door without holding the outside handle unlocks all the doors.
When the door lock knob of the front passenger door is depressed, and this door is closed while holding the outside
handle, only this door locks. If this door is closed without holding the outside handle, it remains unlocked.
The two rear doors are locked by depressing the door lock knobs and closing the doors. These doors also have child
safety locks which, when activated, prohibit opening the doors from inside the vehicle.

to the wiper arm. The motor and bracket are a single, replaceable item.

DESCRIPTION
Headlight Assemblies
Each headlight assembly is aerodynamically shaped to match the contours of the body. The light assembly is attached to
the body by four bolts.
The lens is permanently attached to the plastic refletor. The bulb is of the dual-filament halogen type. The dual filaments
are energized separately to provide high and low beams. An O-ring seals the bulb installation to prevent foreign matter
from entering the headlight assembly. The bulb can be removed/installed from the engine compartment without
removingthe light assembly.

http://www.kiatechinfo.com/viewer/toc_print.asp?vehicletype=Passenger&mfrcode=... 10/12/2011
Page 96 of 115

Each headlight can be adjusted to move the beam up, down, left or right. Two adjustment screws for each headlight
assembly are reached through holes in the body structure, directly above the headlight assembly. The inboard screw
adjusts theleft/right headlight beam, and the outboard screw adjusts the headlight beam up/down.

Body Electrical System > Lighting System > Head Lamps > Repair procedures
ADJUSTMENT
The headlights must be properly aimed to obtain the maximum road illumination and safety. Headlights do not require aim
adjustment if the bulb has only been replaced; however, if the entire headlight assembly has been removed, or if a new
assembly is being installed, aiming should be checked, and adjustment make if required.
• Use a commercially available headlight aiming tool.
• Follow tool manufacturer’s instructions.
• Ensure that the vehicle is on a level or near level surface, consistent with the tool being used.
• Inflate the tires to the specified pressure.
• Load the vehicle in the manner that it is normally operated.
• Follow applicable state laws pertaining to headlight aiming.
• With the aiming tool installed, turn the adjusting screws as required to aim the headlights as follows:

Left Headlight :

Clockwise rotation moves beam up.

Outboard Screw :
Counterclockwise rotation moves beam down

Right Headlight :

Clockwise rotation moves beam left.

Outboard Screw :
Counterclockwise rotation moves beam right.
