Make DIY Thermometer: Mon

Hi, I am Mon. Today, I will show you how to make a DIY Thermometer.
These are the materials that we need.
Alcohol, Dropper , Clear bottle, Marker , Straw , Ruler, Clay and Food color
First, mark the straw 0.5 cm. Insert the straw into the clay.
Next, pour alcohol in the bottle and add few drops of food coloring.
Then, Set aside a full dropper of the alcohol. Use clay to seal the opening of the bottle. The bottle must
be sealed with no air holes
After that, Return the liquid.
Finally, Place two glasses of hot and cold water next to each other
Min: Wait, Mon. How does it work?
Mon: (Put the bottle in a glass of hot water) The heat from the hot water causes the air in the bottle to
expand. Since the bottle is airtight and it can only expand through the straw, the liquid level moves up
through it as it expands.
Min: Amazing.
Mec: What about for the cold water?
Mon: The air contracts as it cools down, making the liquid level goes down inside the straw.
Mec: That's so cool.
Mon: Science is fantastic. What about you, Mec?
Min: Can you show us your experiment?
Pick up ice with a string: Mec
Mec: Sure. Mine is very interesting, too.
I will show you how to pick up Ice cubes with a string.
We will need a bowl, ice cubes, water, string and salt.
First, put the ice cubes inside the bowl. Then, pour two glasses of water into the bowl.
Let it sit for a few seconds.
Next, place a small piece of string over the top of the ice cubes.
Then, sprinkle some salt over the string and wait for a minute.
Finally, lift the string up.
Mon: Wow. How did it happen?
Mec: The freezing point of water and melting point of ice usually 0c. Salt lowers the freezing point
of water to below 0c. When you add salt to the ice cube, it melts a little. Then, the ice quickly
refreezes around the string, allowing you to pick it up!
Min: That is so brilliant.
Mon: What about you, Min? Can you show us your experiment?
Floating egg: Min
Min: Yes, sure. Today, I’ going to show you how to make the egg float.
For this experiment, we need two cups of water, two hard-boiled eggs, and salt.
First, I will gently drop one of the eggs into the water filled glass. You see, it sinks to the bottom. It’s
because the egg is denser than the tap water, so this causes it to sink.
For cup number 2, I will make a salt solution.
First, I will add three tablespoons of salt and then stir it well until the salt dissolves into the water.
Finally, gently drop the egg in the salt solution. And this time the egg floats
Mec: Oh, that was so cool! How does it work?
Min: Dissolving salt in water makes it increase its density this makes the water denser than air causing
the egg to float.
Mon: That’s really interesting.
(Closing) Mon: So, thanks for watching everyone and we hope you enjoyed the video. Goodbye. See
you next time.
