The white precipitate obtained in group V is dissolved in hot acetic acid anddivided into three
parts.

1) To the first part added few drops of potassium chromate Yellow Presence of
solution. precipitate. Ba2+confirmed.

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE
I PRELIMINARY TESTS:
1) Noted the colour of the Salt White Absence of Mn2+,
Cu2+, Fe2+
2) Noted the appearance of the Salt Deliquescent Presence of chlorides
or nitrates of Mn2+,
Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+
3) Noted the odour of the Salt Smell of vinegar Presence of CH3COO-
4) Dry heating Test: heated a pinch of the salt in Smell of vinegar Presence of CH3COO-
a dry test tube
5) Flame Test: Prepared a paste of the salt with No characteristic flame Absence of Sr2+, Ca2+
two drops of conc.HCl and introduced it to the colour Ba2+
burner flame.
II IDENTIFICATION OF ANION
1) Test for carbonate: No brisk effervescence Absence of CO32-
Treated a pinch of the salt with dilute H2SO4
2) Test for chloride: No pungent-smelling Absence of Cl-
Treated a pinch of the salt with conc. H2SO4 gas evolved
3) Test for acetate: vinegar-like smell Presence of CH3COO-
Treated a pinch of the salt with conc. H2SO4 CH3COO- + H2SO4 CH3COOH + HSO4-
4) Test for nitrate: Paper ball test No Brown fumes Absence of NO3-
Take a pinch of the salt in a test tube and add
few drops of conc. H2SO4, warmed the
contents and added a paper ball.
To a small amount of the salt solution, added Brown precipitate Presence of NH4+
a few drops of NaOH solution and few drops Confirmed
of Nessler’s Reagent.

III CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACETATE
Ferric chloride test: To a small portion of the Reddish brown solution Presence of CH3COO-
salt solution, added neutral FeCl3 solution. Confirmed
3CH3COO- + FeCl3 (CH3COO)3Fe + 3Cl-
1) To the first part added potassium chromate Yellow precipitate Presence of Pb2+confirmed
solution.
Pb2+ + K2CrO4 PbCrO4 + 2K+
2) To the second part added potassium iodide Yellow precipitate Presence of Pb2+confirmed
solution.
Pb2+ + 2KI PbI2 + 2K+
RESULT
The original solution of the salt was made by dissolving a small amount of the salt in water.
2) Lake Test: To the second part of the Blue precipitate Presence of Al3+confirmed
solution, added few drops of blue floating on a
litmus solution then NH4OH in excess colourless
AlCl3 + 3NH4OH Al(OH)3+ 3NH4Cl medium(called a
lake)
RESULT:
The given salt contains the anion - SO42- and cation Al3+

Test for chloride: Silver nitrate test Curdy white precipitate Presence of Cl-
Treated a small portion of the salt solution with confirmed
AgNO3 solution.

The original solution of the salt was made by dissolving a small amount of the salt in water.
The dirty white precipitate obtained in group IV is dissolved in dil.HCl and boiled off H 2S gas
then divided into two parts.

1) To the first part added two drops of NaOH White precipitate Presence of
solution. reappears. Zn2+confirmed.
