Introduction

Understanding and managing hazards is crucial for ensuring safety in various environments,
including workplaces, communities, and public health sectors. Three primary models help
categorize and assess these hazards: the Hazardous Agents Model, the FEMA Hazard Model,
and the Risk Assessment Model. The Hazardous Agents Model classifies hazards based on the
type of agent involved, such as physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial
hazards.

What are Three Models of Hazard? (For cognitive (define, identify, list)

The three models of hazard—Hazardous Agents Model, FEMA Hazard Model, and Risk
Assessment Model—provide essential frameworks for identifying, assessing, and managing
risks. The Hazardous Agents Model categorizes hazards based on physical, chemical, biological,
ergonomic, and psychosocial agents. The FEMA Hazard Model classifies hazards into natural,
technological, human-made, and biological categories. The Risk Assessment Model evaluates
hazards based on their likelihood and severity, helping prioritize resources and interventions.
These models are crucial for ensuring workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and public
health by systematically addressing potential hazards and minimizing risks.

The Hazardous Agents Model:

This model categorizes hazards based on the type of agent or substance

involved. It classifies hazards into several categories, including physical, chemical, biological,
ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards.

Physical Hazards: These include hazards such as noise, vibration, radiation, and temperature
extremes.

Chemical Hazards: This category encompasses hazards related to exposure to various chemicals,
including toxic substances, irritants, and carcinogens.

Biological Hazards: Biological hazards involve exposure to living organisms or their byproducts,
such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and allergens.

Ergonomic Hazards: Ergonomic hazards are associated with the design of work tasks,
equipment, and workstation layout that may cause musculoskeletal injuries or disorders.

Psychosocial Hazards: These hazards arise from organizational and social factors in the
workplace, such as stress, violence, harassment, and workload.

The FEMA Hazard Model:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) uses a hazard model

that classifies hazards into four main categories: natural, technological,
human-made, and biological.
Natural Hazards: These include events such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes,
wildfires, and volcanic eruptions.
Technological Hazards: Technological hazards arise from industrial or human activities and
include events such as chemical spills, nuclear accidents, transportation accidents, and
structural failures.
Human-made Hazards: This category encompasses intentional acts that pose threats to safety
and security, including terrorism, sabotage, and criminal activities. Biological Hazards: Biological
hazards involve the transmission of pathogens or toxins that can cause diseases in humans,
animals, or plants.

The Risk Assessment Model:

This model evaluates hazards based on the likelihood of occurrence and

the severity of their potential consequences. It involves assessing risks
by considering factors such as hazard identification, exposure
assessment, toxicity assessment, and risk characterization. Hazards are often classified into
categories such as high risk, moderate risk, and low risk based on their likelihood and potential
impact. Risk assessment models help prioritize resources and interventions to mitigate hazards
and reduce the likelihood of adverse outcomes. These models provide frameworks for
identifying, assessing, and managing various types of hazards in different contexts, whether in
workplace safety, emergency management, or public health.

Importance of Three Models of Hazards For A affective (importance, discuss)

The three models of hazard—the Hazardous Agents Model, FEMA Hazard Model, and Risk
Assessment Model—are crucial for comprehensive hazard management and risk mitigation. The
Hazardous Agents Model helps categorize hazards into specific types such as physical, chemical,
and biological, allowing for targeted safety measures. The FEMA Hazard Model provides a broad
classification that includes natural, technological, and human-made hazards, essential for
emergency preparedness and response planning.

ACTIVITY

ABC GO!” ( example lng ni dapat inyo nga activity is pang individual activity)

MECHANICS:
There are three options in the front, which are A, B, and C.
I will read a question about our discussion, and the student will choose the best answer from
the A, B, and C choices.
The students who choose the wrong answer will be eliminated until all the questions are
done.
All the students that remain will receive a plus point for the quiz.
