Past Perfect Tense

Usage
Past Perfect จะใช้เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลง ก่อนที่จะมีอีกเหตุการณ์เกิดตามมา ซึ่ง
ทั้ง 2 เหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นในอดีตและจบลงในอดีตเรียบร้อยแล้ว มักใช้คู่กับ Past Simple

Structure

หลักการ การใช้ tense นี้

1. ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต โดยเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลงก่อนจะใช้ Past Perfect

ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดหลังจากนั้น ใช้ Past Simple ซึ่งตัวเชื่อมระห่าง 2 Tense นี้

Before ก่อนที่จะ The plane had left by the time I got to the airport.
Ex เครื่องบินได้ออกไปแล้วในตอนที่ฉันถึงสนามบิน
After หลังจากที่
She had established the company before 2020.
Because เพราะว่า เธอได้ก่อตั้งบริษัทก่อนปี 2020

When เมื่อ After the alarm had rung, he woke up.

หลังจากที่นาฬิกาปลุกดัง เขาก็ตื่น
By the time ในตอนที่
He couldn’t call anyone because he hadn’t brought his phone with him.
เขาไม่สามารถโทรหาใครได้เลยเพราะเขาไม่ได้เอาโทรศัพท์มาด้วย

Tips:
After + Past Perfect, Past Simple

Before + Past Simple, Past Perfect

2. ใช้ในประโยค Indirect speech หรือ Reported speech (ประโยครายงาน) โดย Past Perfect ใช้แทน Present
Perfect และ Past Simple
Ex
Past Simple เปลี่ยนเป็น Past Perfect ใน Indirect speech Present Perfect เปลี่ยนเป็น Past Perfect ใน Indirect speech

Direct speech ➜ She said, “I decided to leave earlier today.”
เธอบอกว่า “ฉันตัดสินใจจะออกไปในเร็วขึ้นวันนี้”
Indirect speech ➜ She said that she had decided to leave
earlier that day.
Direct speech ➜ She said, “My mom hasn't arrived yet.”
เธอบอกว่า “แม่ของฉันยังมาไม่ถึงเลย”
Indirect speech ➜ She said that her mom hadn’t arrived yet.

เธอบอกว่าเธอตัดสินใจว่าจะออกไปให้เร็วขึ้นในวันนั้น เธอบอกว่าแม่ของของเธอยังมาไม่ถึงเลย
 3. ใช้ wish + Past Perfect เพื่อแสดงถึงความไม่พอใจกับเหตุการณ์ในอดีต
Ex
I wished I had told the truth.
ฉันหวังว่าฉันจะได้บอกความจริง (แต่ในอดีตไม่ได้บอก)

She wished she had seen her friend.

เธอหวังว่าจะไดเจอเพื่อนของเธอ (แต่เธอก็ไม่ได้เจอในอดีต)

The boy wished he had asked another question.

เด็กชายคนนั้นหวังว่าจะได้ถามอีกซักคำถาม (แต่ก็ไม่ได้ถามในอดีต)

Past Perfect กับ Present Perfect ต่างกันยังไง

Past Perfect ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลง ก่อนที่จะมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นตามหลัง ซึ่งทั้งสอง

เหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นในอดีต แต่ Present Perfect ใช้กับเหตุกาณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตและยังดำเนินมาถึงปัจจุบัน

My sister had done her homework when I came in.

น้องสาวของฉันทำการบ้านเสร็จแล้วตอนฉันเข้าไป

***ใช้ Past Perfect ในประโยคแรกเพื่อให้รู้ว่าเหตุการณ์ที่น้องทำการบ้านเสร็จเกิดก่อน และใช้ Past

Simple ในประโยคที่สองเพื่อให้รู้ว่าเหตุการณ์นี้เกิดทีหลัง แต่ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์เกิดในอดีตทั้งคู่

My sister has already done her homework.

น้องสาวของฉันทำการบ้านเสร็จแล้ว (เพิ่งทำเสร็จ)
***ใช้ Present Perfect เพื่อให้รู้ว่าทำการบ้านมาตั้งแต่ในอดีตและเพิ่งทำเสร็จในปัจจุบัน
