QUESTION 1: SCREW THREADS AND SPRINGS

1.1 Draw, to scale 1 : 1, a conventional representation in section of a right-

handed helical compression spring.

Spring details:

Outside diameter: 60 mm
Lead: 20 mm
Wire size: 10 mm square
Free length 90 mm

The spring can be drawn in any position. (10)

1.2 Draw, to scale 1 : 1, a conventional representation of a full-sectional front

view of left-handed internal square screw threads.

Square screw threads details:

Outside diameter of a workpiece: 130 mm

Pitch: 20 mm
Nominal diameter: 70 mm
Length: 90 mm

The screw threads can be drawn in any position. (10)

[20]

QUESTION 2: GEARS AND KEYS

An involute spur gear is in mesh with an involute rack.

Gear-system details:

SPUR GEAR RACK

Dedendum: 1,25 × module Dedendum: 1,25 × module
Number of teeth: 20 Number of teeth: 24
Module: 11 Module: 11
Fillet radius: 3 mm Height (thickness) of bar: 50 mm
Pressure angle: 20°
Shaft diameter 35 mm

Draw, to scale 1 : 2, a conventional representation of an involute spur gear meshing

with an involute rack in first-angle orthographic projection.

Show ALL calculations. [20]

QUESTION 3: CAMS

Draw, to scale 1 : 1, a full profile of a disc cam with a knife-edge follower using the
following data:

Shaft diameter: 30 mm
Stroke height: 48 mm
Minimum diameter: 46 mm

Performance up (lift): 0° to 180°

Type of motion: simple harmonic motion from 0° to 180°
Performance down (fall): 180° to 360°
Type of motion: uniform acceleration and retardation
Rotation: anticlockwise

The working centre line of the follower must go through the centre of the cam shaft in
the lowest position. The bottom of the follower will be 24 mm from the centre of the
cam shaft.

Show the displacement diagram on the left-hand side of the cam profile. Do NOT insert
any dimensions. Show ALL construction lines. [15]

QUESTION 4: ASSEMBLY DRAWING

FIGURE 1, DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached), shows the components of a crosshead.

The complete list of parts is as follows:

Item 1 Body 1 off Cast steel

Item 2 Bearing half 1 off Cast steel
Item 3 Bearing half 1 off Bronze
Item 4 Connecting rod 1 off Medium-carbon steel
Item 5 Pressure plate 1 off Mild steel
Item 6 Cotter 1 off Mild steel
Item 7 Stud 1 off Mild steel
Item 8 Hexagonal nut 2 off Mild steel

Draw, to scale 1 : 2, an assembly drawing of the half-sectional front view, with the top
half in section, of the position, clearance(s) and missing dimension at the cotter.
Design the slot.

Show hidden detail (dashed lines) on the half NOT in section. Number the various
items on the assembly drawing. [25]

FIGURE 2, DIAGRAM SHEET 2 (attached), shows TWO views of a control unit which
consists of the following components:

Item 1: Body
Item 2: Lever
Item 3: Coupling pin
Item 4: Collar
Item 5: Pin

Draw, to scale 1 : 1, detail drawings of the following components in first-angle

orthographic projection:

5.1 The body (Item 1) showing the following:

5.1.1 The front view (6)

5.1.2 A sectional left view on X-X (8)

5.2 The lever (Item 2) showing the front view. (6)
